Peaks and Pennines: Wales re visited March 2017

25 March 2017 09:00 at Hassop Station - Llangollen

DAITH AR Y FYORDD CYMEU, MAWRTH 25TH 2017
WALES ROAD TRIP, MARCH 25TH 2017

For those who have been before, you will probably know the route better than I do, however for those who haven’t been before, you are in for a treat!

We will be meeting at the “Hassop Station Café” (DE45 1NW) at 9am on Saturday the 25th of March 2017 (I would suggest just a quick drink here, as we will be stopping around 11am for a snack)
9.30am prompt, we leave and make our way over towards Buxton, through Congleton, and on to the M6 for a very short drive of about 6 miles, where we turn off and head towards Bridgemere Garden World (CW57QB) this is the biggest and best garden centre in the country, therefore due to its size and shopping potential, we will allocate two hours here for a snack and a bit of retail therapy. From here we drive on B roads all the way to Llangollen, ending up at the “Ponderosa café” at the top of the Horse Shoe Pass for lunch ( LL20 8DR)
After a quick bite (if required) and the customary photo shoot, it’s back down the pass and straight to the White Waters Hotel in Llangollen (post code LL20 8AD) The plan is to check in around 2.30pm have a wash and brush up, then walk down the path that runs alongside the River Dee into Llangollen (about ¾ mile). We tend to have one or two drinks at the “Corn Mill” and if the weather is kind (or at least not raining) we can sit on the decking which is sited over the edge of the River Dee itself (it’s spectacular, but very chilly, so please wrap up warm) then it’s back to the hotel for Dinner and yet a few more drinks and social banter. As we have used this hotel before, they are charging us £149.85 per couple and £120 per single, for Dinner, Bed and Breakfast, you can upgrade if required, but frankly, the standard rooms are adequate for one night. Please take a look at their web site. www.whitewatershotel.co.uk

The following morning, after a short trip down the A5 and the A483, we drive onto roads which most serious motorists only dream about. I won’t go into great detail at this point, but if you are in any doubt, just ask anyone who’s been before, and then watch their face!
In short, we turn right off the A483 (at the White lion pub.SY10 8LJ) and on to the A495, we follow this road until we get to the A490, where we turn right heading towards Llanfyllin, passing the Lianfyllin Workhouse on route ( SY22 5LD) then it’s a left turn onto the B4393 to Abertridwr, here we take a right turn at the so called petrol station (SY100LT) where the roads turns into the B4396 towards Penybontfawr, then it’s a left on B4391 towards Bala. Here we can take a short comfort break if required. From Bala the road take us on the A4212 and eventually back onto the infamous A4391 which, God willing, leads us safely to Ffestiniog. We then pass through Bleaenau Ffestiniog ending up at Betys-y-Coed where we can take a longer break. There is plenty of parking here for only £2 for two hours (20p mind you to spend a penny!). After lunch, it’s up the A5 and onto the A55 heading towards Llandudno, we then drive over the Great Orme, they charge £2 per car, but at least there’s a small café at the top with fantastic views. Then down the other side to a large shingle beach, where we can all re live our childhood, yes its MX5 Kite flying competition, where the highest kite and the most outlandish kite, just might win a small prize. From here it’s a short drive back to the A55 and then homeward bound. Some of us also take the opportunity to stay over on the Sunday night, so if this is something that appeals to you, please let me know

The reason I’m sending you this information seven months in advance, is due to the fact that the Rolls Royce, Lotus and MG owners clubs also use the White Waters Hotel, and therefore its first come first served.

YOUR NEXT STEP
If you would like to join us, I will need a small deposit of just £25 per room before or at the next MX5 meeting on the 5th of October, please also ensure that I have your full names and email address, in order for me to confirm your deposits have been used to secure your room.
Please contact me on:
Email trevor.1.walker@btinternet.com
Deposits at the October 5th meeting
WHAT YOU WILL NEED
1. Warm clothes for the Saturday afternoon in Llangollen
2. Camera for the budding photographers
3. Full tank of fuel for the start of each day (there’s a decent petrol station in Llangollen)

Western: GWR Run To Europe

20 September 2017 00:00 at That place we've all just voted to leave lol

We have decided to take GWR across the water and we are arranging a European road trip. If you are free between the 20th and 25th of September 2017 and want to join a few of us on some of the best driving roads in the world just let me know. Planning is very much in its infancy, but we will be looking at taking in some great roads around France, Switzerland and anywhere else that will have us. Be warned though, this will be a driving holiday, you could be driving for between 6 to 8 hours a day and we will be staying in budget hotels to keep the price down and finding places to eat as we go. So if you are more accustomed to 5* treatment, you might want to give this a miss. You will have to have a slightly adventurous side and like to explore small towns and villages looking for somewhere to eat and of course try the local wines on a budget, which from my experience is the fun way to do it. Let me know if you would like to come along and we can all get together and talk over the plans that Pete is currently roughing together.
