Induction Kit Question for Crispy
chris,
If I remember it was an induction kit we fitted on your car at the Tech Day. Did you also change the hoses, I cannot remember. Also have you noticed any difference to the engine power, or smoothness.
A friend is about to order an induction kit for his MK 2

Re: Induction Kit Question for Crispy
Hello Hello!
Sorry, have been out of the office until today. Happy New Year to all!
We fitted a K+N filter charger so there was no need to change the hoses. We were going to put the cold air pipe in too however couldn't find space for it anywhere.
In terms of performace the car does noticeably feel to pull more especially past 3,000rpm and makes a lovely growl. At present i am waiting for Alan to finish fitting my decat pipe and new parts exhaust, plus i am running higher octane fuel which will hopefully bring a combined gain. Will update when i pick the car up.
IMO, the cost of the filter is definitely worth it and in talking to anyone who tries to get the best performance out of their engine is the first thing they change.

Re: Induction Kit Question for Crispy
Hi,
I too can vouch for the K&N induction kits having recently fitted the Typhoon to my mk2.5
Not cheap at around £170 from MX5parts (slightly cheaper on Ebay) .but i got lucky getting one half price from an OC member.
They look good & sound great without being OTT in my humble opinion & as to whether it adds more zip i can`t be sure but it sure sounds like it !!
Picture of mine here if you are interested

Re: Induction Kit Question for Crispy
I've been thinking of fitting one of these to my 1999 Mk2 . Its down the list a bit but is on the list. I've also read eleswhere that they slightly enhance performance and fuel economy, but the main reason for fitting is the sound :-)
I rang my insurer, (Direct Line) this morning to ask if fitting this mod would make any difference. It does! A 0-10% performance enhancing mod adds £4/month, so thats something else to consider too.

Re: Induction Kit Question for Crispy
i fully recommend fitting the K+N filter, alot of people say it is the first thing to start with on any engine as it is techincally the mouth of the engine allowing it to breathe.
The sound is satisfying with the filter alone and i definitely felt that the free reving through 2nd and 3rd gear was increased. Having had most of the work done to mine though i'd go further and say decat the car and add a decent exhuast, some people may disagree but i have noticed a difference. Having said that a certian member of this site who worked on the car said he was surprised at how responsive my car was (1.6) compared to some of the 1.8's he's worked on.
As for the insurance, i'd take the £4 per month....or just don't say anything! :p

Re: Induction Kit Question for Crispy
One final question. I was chatting to a work colleague today whose brother had a 1.6 Mk1 fiitted with a K&N kit. He said that after a time, the MAF could well be affected. Is this rumour or true?

Re: Induction Kit Question for Crispy
don't think anyone knows for sure: the MAF gets screwed if oil contaminates it. whether in your car, with that filter, the oil catching the dust on the filter gets sucked through into the MAF, is a hard one to answer. in the VAG forums a lot of people use Green Cotton filters as they *apparently* don't do this - but it's all a bit vague and full of hearsay. You'll probably be fine.

Re: Induction Kit Question for Crispy
quite a few of the guys i know with 5's have filters fitted and this problem has never been mentioned. These are a mix of experienced owners and people who work in the motor trade so i would say not to worry.

Re: Induction Kit Question for Crispy
It is not a problem if you stick to using the recomended K&N oil and only a small amount as directed by K&N.
If it was a problem I would stick my neck out and say K&N would have gone out of business years ago.
If it's broken, repair and improve it. If it an't broken, just improve it. Mk2.5 1.8 2004 Strato Blue. Re: Induction Kit Question for Crispy
One final question folks honest then I might finally buy one of the damn things...
I've seen pictures of some fitted that have a metal heat sheild in place on the engine side of the filter. Is this necessary? I would have thought that the existing exhaust manifold HS was sufficient. I guess though that you would be drawing in hotter air from the engine bay as opposed to the standard air box with an intake near to the front. Once moving forward however, I cant see this as a problem. Whats your experience?

Re: Induction Kit Question for Crispy
MX5parts have just reduced the Typhoon from £185 down to £158 so I will be ordering one tomorrow :-)

Good decision
Fitting instructions & tools required here if you want to read up in advance, although all very simple really.

No need to disconnect battery & the MAS wire in my opinion, just swing the MAS out the way leaving the wires attached.
Here`s what i found useful.... Socket set with extension bars & a svivel joint. Allen Keys to tighten the K&N hose clamps. Couple of cable ties to tidy the wires afterwards. Screwdrivers, Longnose pliers to detach the wiring clips from the old airbox. Think that`s about it.
Although knowing MX5parts you have already recieved it & probably fitted it by now.
