Re: 8" door speakers for mk2?

    Spoonyboy:

Now that is one nice big looking speaker!!!

Would be grateful if you could let me know (and the rest of us) what the speaker model number is? and if you had any difficulties installing? Did you have to drill any holes or cut away any metal?

Of course. The speakers are JBL GT5-803 and I got mine from Car Audio Direct. To fit them I didn't cut away any metal, but the speakers don't fit completely snug in the existing holes, but they do fit well enough not to rattle or buzz. I did also have to drill new holes as the tabs sat better where I drilled the holes. They sound great and fit very well behind the door cards though so I am very happy with the results.

    I hope this helps.

i made a "spacer" out of some 6mm MDF and put a 6x9" speaker in my doors instead, as i alredy had the infinity 6x9 speakers already and loved the sound,

Re: 8" door speakers for mk2.5?

     Hello,

Well I finally got round to installing my 8inch pioneer speakers in my Mk2.5.  Very straight forward, I just drilled small pilot holes and screwed them in.  I dynomated between the speaker/metal as well as behind the speaker.  These are being run directl from a 4 channel amp (behind the passenger seat), with the powered sub behind my seat there is some fantastic sounds.  All I need now is to install the speakers on the rear deck.

P.S the speakers as sold on mx-5parts that just screw into the fittings are on ebay.

     Neilmong.

Thanks for the info/posts.  I am about to upgrade with a JVC XR811 head unit and Pioneer 2003i 20cm speakers (no amp tho).

Could you repost your photos of the doors, as they are no longer available and would be pretty helpful to me.  Did you fit the door speakers using pilot holes and self tappers?

Also  - did you leave the OEM tweeters connected, or will it all sound better if they are disconnected? (I guess they are pretty cheap ones, and the Pioneers have tweeters)

    cheers

Hello Wrongun, I'm afraid I have lost the pics.  When you take the door card off you will see that the OEM speakers have a surround to hold them in place.  When the whole lot is removed you will be able to put the speaker direct into the hole.  I used self tapping screws and not the original holes.  I also put dynamat on the surface of the door and around the hole to absord rattles etc.  As you say you don't need the tweeters, I sold mine on ebay.  The sound difference is amazing.  Good luck and enjoy.

     Thanks

No worries about the pictures..  I think I know what I have to do.   I am gunna hold onto the OEM stereo and speakers incase I sell the car and wanna keep the new stuff.  I dont have any dynamat, but if I have a vibration issue I will get some.

    cheers

Re: 8" door speakers for mk2.5?

     Hi,

    ICE upgrade upadate

I fitted these at the weekend.   I ended up with the Pioneer 2013i 20cm (8") units.  These have a 4-hole pattern, so no drilling of the door was was required.  However, the speakers' Chassis (supporting the magnet), was too fat to fit the hole in the door.  I did get them in, but had to use spacers to mount the speakers about 5mm proud of the metalwork of the door.  Happily, the trim went back on ok, and they sound awesome, with no rattles etc.  The bass is very strong and tight, and the midrange clear.  Interestingly, my doors had no OEM tweeters in them, or even holes in which to mount them.  Is this normal for a Mk2.5?  Overall, very pleased with my JVC 811 XR and Pioneer 2013i combo.   Total cost was ~£260 including loom adaptor (all from Caraudiodirect).   I am planning to keep the old head unit and speakers and refit them if I sell/write off the car.
