Yeah, It was called the Perana Capri. They were designed and then made by Basil Green Motors in Johannesburg.

They were originally built as an aftermarket conversion, but Ford was so impressed with the build quality and how well they performed that they decided to sell them through the Ford dealerships with a full warranty. It used a 5.0 V8 from a Mustang and did a 0 to 60mph in a little over 3 seconds (Remember, This was in the early 70's and that was quick even for supercars of the day !!!).

I think they only did the conversion to the MK1's and only ever sold a few hundred of them as the costs of the full conversion made the retail price so high as to be competing with much more prestigious sports car brands.

Is that enough info for you? Stick Tongue Out

    Scotty B.

I went to the bank today to ask for a loan.
"What do you need the money for sir?"
    "It's for a car."
"Oh nice, what are you getting?"
    "Just some unleaded."

Filling spare time whilst recovering from illness so reading old posts.

I once p/xed a lovely white Sunbeam Alpine 2 seater sports car for a red Ford Consul Capri GT the sporty parent of the Ford Consul Classic saloon.

Had the Capri re-sprayed white, BIG mistake as it was badly done leaving me with pink door jams and sills!

The twin weber carbs were never in tune and it was no faster than my Dads 1500cc Ford Consul Classic, itself rare in 2 door grey with white roof.  They made  nice co-ordinating pair on the drive though.

Lovely unusual car though, and so cool tooling around my home town of Bournemouth in.  In the end had to almost give it away to a dealer for much need cash.

Dont like to admit to these things but I once had a `hand-me-down` Capri Mk2 1.6 XL, red with black vinyl roof, awful in every respect, except one. It had no power, terrible handling, rubbish brakes, but boy did it look good after my first car, a Hillman Avenger 1600 Super Estate..........Huh?

That brings back memories of when the tank straps snapped on my S reg 1600 Capri. Fortunately I wasn't going at any great speed, so managed to stop fairly sharpish. It must have been a fairly common occurance, as the metal straps were quite flimsy, and quite spectacular if you were hurtling along a motorway..Shock
