Intermittent noise from rear when reversing

    Afternoon folks,

I've been experiencing a deep loud sort of metal grinding yawn noise when i reverse sometimes, usually seems to be after a long drive and gets worse if i turn whilst reversing. I always thought that the sound was louder when inside the car since it's all connected, but some kids outside my girlfriends house heard it when i was there recently... making me worry as i'm beginning to think it's getting louder.

There's no obvious things to make a noise, had a good tug on all the suspension components and all seems well, this makes me then question if it's the rear diff or something?? Thinking

Anybody else experienced anything like this???

    Let me know pleeeeeeeaaaaaase Smile

    Thanks in advance

Re: Intermittent noise from rear when reversing

    Hi all

Sorry to resurrect such an old post but i seem to have similar symptoms in my car. Just noticed over the last week or so when i reverse the car i am hearing what sounds like metal scraping on the road for a short distance (say 10ft) then it stops. Can't see anything obvious under the car but haven't jacked it up to have a proper look..

Jack: if you're still about - did you ever get to the bottom of this one?

Or if anyone else has any ideas that would be much appreciated

    cheers

Have you checked the brake pads? Could be a pre-warning system on the brake discs rubbing on the disc - makes a godawful grinding noise, some pads have them, some don't. They are designed to warn you when the pad is down to a low level of material. Odd that it doesn't happen when going forward, but that may be that they have been fitted backwards and the noise isn't happening in that direction, stranger things have happened.

Otherwise no helpful guesses from me - worth taking to a garage and getting them to jack it up on their lift, a noise like that should be a fairly obvious failure.

    Jack.

cheers Jack, will check the pads and get the car in the air to have a look - like you say it should be obvious but i can't see why it would only make a noise going backwards if it was a physical item actually scraping.. funny enough, it's not done it since i wrote the post this morning!
