There has been a fair amount of debate on the forum about the service or lack of from certain insurers.

Let's have your views please on all/any companies that you have done business with. The good stuff and the bad.

Please only one comment per post, I will delete any responses to the op. I simply want a feel for the insurers as a whole without a long debate

Classic policy (no NCB earned on this one), non-garaged, 5,000 miles/year but also includes full breakdown cover, SDP + commuting use and 3rd party cover for non-owned vehicles. They also accepted my suspension, wheel and exhaust mods at no extra cost.

Underwritten by Equity Red Star and purchased via their own broker, RH Specialist Car Division. Recent renewal is exactly the same as last year. FJ's last "OC discounted" quote was nearly twice the amount of my current ERS premium.

The staff at RH Specialist Car Division are friendly and efficient.

Richard Egger were not bad either. Slightly higher premium than ERS for me and unfortunately no breakdown cover included, still way ahead of FJ's "OC" quote though. Richard Egger are definitely worth a call if your car is heavily modified and/or you need trackday cover.

Didn't even bother with a quote from Chris Knott, on principle.

Aviva, good price good cover, will not consider any mods, will be changing at renewal time.

 ive just changed to reis/richard eggert saving £300 no problems with my mx5 parts stainless sports exhaust sports induction filter etc and its an eunos very pleased   

Just changed all my policies over to ADRIAN FLUX One is a cherished policy limited mileage no mods with agreed value on my 96 MK1 Full NCB, drive other cars TP. One is a Eunos with Exhaust,suspension, air intake all declared as modified and limited mileage, one is a 2009 Focus CC3 and a Nissan Pathfinder 2007 all Fully Comp, All full NCB. Nearest quote from anybody else was £400 more. And very good service.

Admiral - excellent.  Have used them for about 5 years.  They cover my MK3 2.0 sport, with lowering (<5cm), SS exhuast, plus exterior mods (basically clear side repeaters) for £340 a year.  8000 miles a year, garaged, 35 year old.  My wife claimed on her Subaru through them last year after reversing into a post and they sorted it out without any fuss.

 Tried Chris knott twice, told systems down, didnt try again. Contacted REIS and got unlimited mileage cover, 4 trackdays, no problems with mods for half the premium my current insurer wanted.

 Bell Insurance - Admiral subsiduary dealing with young and low NCB drivers.

'96 mk1, 2yr NCB, 6k miles pa, SS exhaust, me (30) and the wife (26) car stored in a garage as a second car.

Grand total of £470 so well chuffed!

PS: Moved from Direct Line who have changed underwriters and told me they will no longer cover mods.

 For the MX5s/Roadsters:

McWhirters (N.Ireland insurers who provide Mazda Cars with cover); left after being told they retrospectively no longer insure imports.

Aon: overall very good for me. Especially good  during a total loss claim, after my Roadster was torched following a club meeting. Only switched away from because of convenience; they were hard to contact outside of office hours.

Adrian Flux; more or less the same sort of premium as Aon. More demanding when it comes to documentation. Not great in the event of an actual claim (no courtesy car, left my car abandoned at the repairers, without actually notifying the insurers, so no work could progress, left to me to do all the leg work), and badly miscalculated my renewal (underestimated by £100). Still, they print a nice magazine.....With them currently, probably not next year, mainly on the basis of their poor performance following a claim (which is in line with a relative's experience of them in a claim).

I have used adrian flux in the past to insure my old modified mk4 astra. they were always very helpful on the phone and the premium was competative. For me their big selling point is covering all declared mods like for like, but only charging for those that increase BHP.

This means a big brake and suspension upgrade that could add a lot to a different insurers premium costs nothing,woo! Once my current policy with admiral runs out i will almost definately be going back to flux, as i plan to mod the '5.I phoned them the other day to get some info and they even still have all my details on file,which should make sorting out a policy next year nice and easy.

Admiral- had a cougar insured with them and now the mx5 as there is time left on the policy. they were the right price, although how they'd fare in a claim is anybodies guess.

Direct line- good comprehensive cover level but pretty expensive....I left them after they wanted an additional £150 from me for moving 500yards down the road (first half of the postcode was still the same!!)

You may have seen in other threads that I have been trying to get cover for Romania and Ukraine. Well today I received a letter from Adrian Flux to show at the at borders explaining that although they cannot offer me comprehensive cover for those particular countries, they will cover me with the minimum legal requirements. This should be enough to get me across the borders in question.
Very pleased with both the letter and there service.

Have been speaking to a lot of insurance companies recently on the quest for cover so will add this about another couple of companies.

Post office, very abrupt on the phone and not in the least bit helpful.

Chris Knott, not able to assist, but very pleasant on the phone and offered useful advice.

I have my Mk 1 on 2000 limited miles,ungarged,full comp with AON/FJ,in war torn manchester.

The Mk 2 is unlimited miles ungarged full comp with AON/FJ also in rif raf dead end manchester 

Both are imports,and have improvements,nothing major.

And have been with them for to many years to think about it,they have always been spot on to deal with,but will be trying MOT insurers for a quote(will not hurt to ask?),I believe they are good,Thanks nick,if not i'll stay where i am.

Tried the knotts for a quote,and have not laughed that loud and that long for a long time.

Mk2 1.8i S, completely standard, full ncd, not protected, £300 excess, drivers 42 and 45, unlimited mileage, through Swiftcover online premium £150 odd. 

Now I work for a large insurer dealing with motor claims complaints............. and its not Swiftcover, but we insure all our cars through them, if you are ok with hitting a few keys on your pc once a year then its as simple as pie. Not had a claim with them yet, hope to never test that service.

2007 2.0 Sport.  Just insured through Footman James with owners club discount.  Very friendly and beat all comparison web sites I tried and includes full uk, europe breakdown with homestart.  My protected premium was £399.  Clean licence, no claims.  I dealt with Simom - very helpful.
