    Re: Insuring your MX5/Roadster

2002 Mk2.5 1.8 Sport, from new - been with AON for several years and now with Footman James (which is AON!) Similar to Richard above, no complaints, cost £345 P.A. Have looked around, and most companies now refuse to cover me (I'm 76) or want excessive premiums if they will. I have a no claims record of 45 years - at least, but I've had so many different insurers it's impossible to prove all of it now. I have 'basic' business use cover, but no cover for tools, or goods in transit.

Nearly went to Liv.Vic a couple of years back, but they refused to accept that a Mk2.5 Sport has six gears - "It's only got five" so I didn't bother, as I didn't want a refusal down the line for having an ' unotified modded car' if I ever needed to claim.

Price has always been the main factor for me, then cover - and all the inclusions and exclusions in the policy - it's a minefield and can take weeks to finalise a good insurer, so after a while you stay where you are the most satisfied. The current Footman James policy is one of the best I have ever had, in fact I was surprised at the extras included in the cover. = Comp. Plus.

    Cheaper insurance over 50? yeah - till you reach 65 - - - - -

Five is Alive 2002 Mk2.5 Sport, with added Mazda body kit, 15 inch Rota Circuit 8 with Toyos, rescued wood rim steering wheel from a crashed Arizona. Air intake mods to come (one day!) Hard Dog Deuce rollbar. and HT (permanent fixture!) - Its still a sportscar.

    Re: Insuring your MX5/Roadster

Footman James - on some cars incredibly cheap, includes European breakdown cover and good company that has supported a number of car clubs over the years. On the Roadster they were almost twice the price of others.

Direct Line - currently cheapest option for Roadster for us, quotes included FJ, Adrian Flux, REIS, and online comparison sites. Direct Line cheaper than all of them, and always quick to pick up the phone, cover up to £1K of ICE without question, but immobiliser and proof of fitting must be present and non-negotiable to cover for theft.

Kwik-Fit - All round crap service, but decent price. Gets you 10% off Kwik Fit prices for the car covered, but frankly you could get 30% off by going to a decent garage. Offered cover without immobiliser on a car which required immobiliser from everyone else.

Co-op - dealt with them when someone covered by them crashed into classic car. Very very good, helpful, provided courtesy car for over a month while damage repaired by the garage of my choice, regular contact, look forward to one of their drivers crashing into me again :D

    Jack.

"less than 200 quid fully comp "

Thanks, but it doesn't really tell us a lot - car model / age / use / parking / cover type etc. would be helpful.

    Re: Insuring your MX5/Roadster

Saga? - I asked them for a Comp. quote about five years ago, as a comparison to AON. Saga's price was £20 less than AON's, BUT - no trackday cover, which is damned expensive if you want it, and haven't got it. - I stayed with AON. Couple of years later, now past the trackday urge, I asked Saga again, they wanted £400+. - I didn't bother.

£200 has got to be TPF&T I reckon, or the cars wrapped in cotton wool?

Also -  off topic, but was insured with SAGA for the house, but after we had a water leak (outside), which carried a £150 excess - which we paid up front obviously - they then jacked the next years premium up by the same amount.  I understand Saga changed hands a while back, so the new owner(s) are obviously not 'senior' minded.

Aon insured me in Belfast and Carrickfergus, no problem. I think they became subsumed into Footman James (or the other way round; Aon is a huge insurance company). That was with the special MX5OC Club policy.

McWhirters  used to provide Mazda insurance; I was with them, until they decided they didn't like imports. They might have softened since then.

Australian Spec. (Mazdaspeed) SE Turbo + mods.

    Just renewed yet again with Adrian Flux. Everyone else is scared by a one-off & then they just commit suicide when they find out about the mods. & power increase. {#emotions_dlg.indif}

Two other cars with them & limited mileage helps.

    Thankyou Mr. Flux.

Richard Eggar are the only company who have known what a welded diff was when I phoned. No issues at all with the turbo, roll cage, spacers, comedy brakes or any of the rest of the non-standard bits so they got my business. £300 fully comp.

RH or something for the RX7 on a classic policy - £100 fully comp. That's the sort of price I like for insurance.

I have a zillion years NCB.

My 1997 1.8se Mk1 (UK) is fully comp with Admiral, declaired mods and its £123 per annum!

Being in a low risk postcode and "older" and an IAM pass does have its benefits....

    Re: Insuring your MX5/Roadster

Geoff , if you want a reaction here  goes:  Footman James is an absolute  farce, the advertisement is misleading as is the inference that they offer  a range of insurance options.  In April when I went to  re-insure  my  1998 Mk2 which had  been off road and SORNed  they initially  told me in a  very offhand way that  they were  not able to offer insurance  on my requirements

East Suffolk, (as you  know a  high crime area) garaged, used to occasionally travel to work, 6k miles pa.  Me and Wife  full ncd  previously, both  50+ "safe" occupations.  Also  gave  previoous Aon FJ insurance references from 6  months previously.

After offhand treatment and my continued reference to  OC I was transferred to a supervisor who was equally  curt, not interested in OC or  MX-5 and said they couldn't  offer me terms as  my vehicle and situation was not  insurable!.

I rang off,  Went to Avviva  got a deal for  @£200.  FJ rang back said they  had  now found  record of  my original policy and could offer  me (and this is from memory, @£350).  I am so annoyed every time I see that  misleading advert in STHT that I am considering whether I rejoin the OC  next time as  I do not  believe it is  correct that the  OC associates with  such shabby treatment of OC members.

For information I have an old  Land Rover which is insured with  FJ with a clear discount if you are a member of the  MVT, much better  arrangement.

    Re: Insuring your MX5/Roadster

After receiving my renewal reminder from Direct Line yesterday, I decide to have a look round to see if I could a get a better deal.

I've been insured with them for over 8yrs, been driving over 15yrs, have protected NCD no convictions or claims and they are asking for £412 fully comp for my un modified garaged Mk2.5 04 Sport.

The most I've been quoted so far is over £900! Sick

Cheapest so far is Sheilas Wheels. If you can bare the very pink website its worth a look, as I've got a quote for £334!

With free courtesy car, protected NCD, legal cover AND Roadside and Home breakdown cover provide by Green Flag it still comes in cheapest at £405.Smile
