    Clutch Judder--NB (MK2)

Clutch Judder - MX-5/Eunos/Miata Mk2.5 (Facelift) Made between unknown release dates (Spring 2001) To May/June 2004.All models, and both 1.6L and 1.8L engines. This is now more of a historical note that an active problem - very few cars are left with clutch judder, though odd ones still come on the market as second and third hand cars, with the original problem. This note is for those buyers of such cars, which still have the problem.                          The reasons why some cars are still not rectified is two-fold, some dealers told the original owner that the judder was not a fault, just their newness to a sports car "They all do that - you just need to get used to it" In other instances some owners made their own judgement, they assumed it was either their fault, or they got rid of the car. Some dealers wouldn't tell an owner even if they knew the car had judder, why remains a mystery, as any rectification work was covered by Mazda, though some dealers didn't think they were paid enough to cover the work. There was no 'open publicity' on the subject; no recall was issued, so if you or a previous owner never contributed to our forum, then they never knew it was a problem. Without going into the long process it took to get Mazda to finally cure the problem, it was finally cured in Spring time of 2004, and all cars off the line after around May or June of that year came with the latest clutch plate fitted. Make a note, the correct clutch plate was a 1460E, if you suspect the car you bought recently (which fits into the above dates) still has judder, then contact your nearest Mazda Dealer and give them the VIN number of the car - if any rectification work was carried out on the car by a Mazda dealer, then the record of that will be on Mazda's official service history. Any record showing a plate before the suffix E was not a good replacement. (1460C, or D) This will not tell you definitely that no rectification work was done - independents were fitting Japanese OEM clutch plates as early as 2003, which worked successfully. And some owners preferred to pay for the job than risk having several replacements done by a Dealer (some cars had as many as four of five clutches before being cured!) In such cases it is highly unlikely that the car will still have judder, the aftermarket Japanese plates resulted in a 'first time' successful repair.. The standard Mazda warranty on clutch plates (and brake pads) is twelve months, or 9,000 miles, and any replacement only carries warranty for the remainder of the mileage or time - not for another twelve months or 9.000 miles! There's also a 'fair wear and tear' clause. We recommend several independent garages in the U.K., if you want to know one near you, then ask on our forum stating where you live please, we don't need the full address, just the nearest Town, City or County. These will fit a new aftermarket clutch plate for at least £100 less than dealer price, though if you prefer (or have to) use a dealer then budget for around £380.
