Well what can I say, great weather, great racing and superb support from the MX-5 OC. Friday testing was initially troubling as both cars lacked grunt down the straights. This was puzzling as both had made good power on the dyno. A quick timing check showed that the operator had gone for max power rather than any thought of driveability, so after a quick adjustment back to a tried and tested setting, the next session yielded a 5 second improvement with no problems keeping up with our competitors. Race day yielded 10th fastest in qualifying 1 for Gary Huffford (45), with my first ever attempt qualifying at Silverstone, yielding 26th fastest in the 2nd session. Race 1 for the mk1's saw a poor start for Gary dropping several places, however once he had settled Gary started picking people off and recovered to 12th at the chequered flag. In race 2 I managed to make a good start picking up a couple of places before getting into a great battle with Iain Cameron (21), Kevin Middleton (7), Jordan Stilp (92) and Clive Bailey (102), gradually climbing up the order to 17th. On the second from last lap exiting the hairpin I thought I had selected the wrong gear as the engine just died and then recovered, losing me two places. On the last lap it happened again at the same place again costing two places. I set off after Iain Cameron and managed to get right on his tail at Brooklands. As we entered Luffield Iain was fighting understeer allowing me a chance to keep tight and pass him on the inside regaining 1 of the lost places to take 20th at the flag. Post race inspection showed the idle damper on the throttle body hanging off causing the throttle to jam at idle momentarily. With the problem sorted both of the Finishline cars took the start for race 3 and we were both going well before the unfortunate accident involving Craig Johns (133) and Tazou Takahashi (43). Wishing them both a speedy recovery.
It was really good to see so many cars turn up for the parade and stay for the racing. Would have loved to bring the race cars over to the line-up but with such a tight race schedule attentions were focused on the track. As it was our mechanic took Garys car for the parade lap, which left things very tight as his race was called while the parade laps were still going on, resulting in one very nervous pre-race Driver. Hope to meet some of you throughout the season, feel free to pop in for a chat. Finally please let me know if you would like me to continue to update you all with our progress throughout the year.
