    Trip to Germany in 2012

     Hi All,

I have mentioned this to a few people but now wanted to gauge interest on here. While I was with the Oxford Area I started planning for a week away in Germany but I moved before we got to go. I got this task having lived in Germany for 20 years and speaking fluent German. The basic idea would be a week (but this is flexible) away in either May or June. The area I was looking at was the Mosel near Cochem. I know some of our area are (or were) there recently. I was in touch with a German MX5 group who pointed me in the direction of  a hotel in the area.  http://www.hotel-weissmuehle.de/englisch/index.htm

I had planned to make up short 1-2 hour runs from the Hotel and give everybody a route book so they could pick which one they wanted when they wanted to do it rather than be bound to being in a convoy on set days. Things to see in the area range from the Nurburgring to Fairytale castles. There are quite a few nice towns to visit along the river and it is of course a big wine making region.

So if anybody is interested please let me know and I can set the wheels in motion again. A possibility because of the distance and mileage to get there would be an overnight stop in Belgium, but this can be talked about if enough interest is shown.

    Cheers

     Hi Colin and Jan

Jan and I are very interested. We lived in Germany for a number of years when I was in the RAF, alas only speak fluid german. We drove thro Germany last year on our way to Austria, not in the Mazda, stopping at various locations, so might have some useful info. Please keep us informed.

    Hi Jan & Colin

Hope you enjoyed your cruise. We would possibly be interested in this trip. Although we won't be living in the East Mid Area, we're hoping we can remain members.

We don't plan to let you get away that easily Ann!!!!!!! You will always be welcome at NEM events.

Paul and I are thinking about this trip too, and I've spoken to Colin. However it is our 25th wedding anniversary late April and we want to go away to celebrate that, which may preclude me taking holiday again within a short space of time, but we will see how things progress.

Re: Trip to Germany in 2012

    Hi All,

Just starting to make enquiries for prices and availability for this. Up to now from the interest I have on here I have 12 names.

    Me & Jan

    Andy +1 (peterborough)

    Alan & Jan

    Ann & Dave

    Rich +1

    Janice & John

Now some people mentioned to me at the Burton meet that they might be interested and Clive and Maureen did show interest when first mentioned so I have calculated on 16 people and 8 cars. If anybody wants to add their name no problem as these are just figures for me to start with.

On top of this I have looked at the German holiday calendar and have thought about 2 dates. We thought maybe go Friday to Friday then we have the weekend to recover when we get back. The first date would be 4-11 May and the second 25 May to 1 June. Now I realize both of these cover a bank holiday which would save on time off but some people may have other things planned. So please let me know the general concensus of opinion on this before I make any mistakes. I have emailed the hotel mentioning both dates so I will let you know when I hear anything.

Does anybody have any particular likes or dislikes as far as ferry routes are concerned. I personally would look at Ramsgate Dunkirk first. ViaMichelin says 4h 34m from Dunkirk to Cochem. Again please let me know any preferences. I will see what I can do.

So that is all for now.

    Colin & Jan

Ps. Sorry about the font I don't seem to be able to change it.

Re: Trip to Germany in 2012

    Hi

I think I'm right in saying that the late BH has been moved to 4th June next year because of the Jubilee Celebrations.

As far as we are concerned either date is fine with us.

Re: Trip to Germany in 2012

     Hi All,

Latest update - Had an email back from the hotel. They can't do the dates I suggested. They have given me 28th May to 7 June. This doesn't fit in with my thinking so will look elsewhere. Rooms would be €45 per person per night including breakfast (without balcony) or €50 (with balcony). I will try the guy that Jim & Cath & Alan used too. See if he can help.

Re: Trip to Germany in 2012

     Hi Colin and Jan,

I've just returned from a weekend at the Nurburgring and we stopped at a good and economically priced B&B there (roughly £25 per person per night), which is less than 1 hours drive to Cochem. Here's the website

Regards the ferry, we went DFDS Seaways (used to be Norfolkline) from Dover to Dunkirk which was cheap at £45 return. We stopped over in Folkstone on the way over, but drove back in a day. It was about 4.5 hours drive from Dunkirk to Nurburg.

    Hope this helps?

Re: Trip to Germany in 2012

    Hi Rich,

Thanks for the info. This is really helpful. I have used DFDS too. I keep getting offers from them. So would you recommend the B&B? I've just read they have 13 rooms so that should be enough. I will get in touch with a few places this week. So hope to have an update later in the week.

    Cheers

     Hi Colin/Rich

Re: Ferries, are their ramps suitable for slightly lowered MX's? I've only ever used them in conventional saloons.

    Regards

Re: Trip to Germany in 2012

    Hi Alan,

From my experience I don't think it will be a problem but I'm sure someone else will come along who has more info. We used to use the ferries regularly with our Honda accord which was severely lowered and long and never had problems.

    Regards
