    Re: Turbo or Supercharger?

    Rob Morgan:

I have been asking myself this question for ages! I have very little knowledge on FI, all i have ever owned are n/a petrol cars.

I'd like to throw some questions in:

    1. which is better £/bhp or are they similar?

    2. i'm guessing that a SC would offer better reliability? is this true?

3.what are servicing costs on SC and turbo's? i.e. re-building etc. Please note, i know very little, so i am just going off things i've heard.

The answer to those questions depends on the set-up of supercharger or turbo.... For example, if you fuel either incorrectly then expect them to fail or not be reliable or if you over-boost etc etc...

I've driven quite a few turbo'd MX5s and some are really quick, others are fast but don't have the traditional turbo lag or massive power spike that makes them difficult to drive. However, I remember one that didn't feel any different to a standard car - it just wasn't set-up properly....

    Set-up is key....

    Re: Turbo or Supercharger?

Any ideas of a ballpark figure for getting a specialist garage to do the work? Is turbocharging about the same cost as supercharging? What are we talking about £1k £5k £10k?

    Re: Turbo or Supercharger?

Thats turboed and they only do turbos. You can get the Jackson Racing super charger from moss europe for around 3k but then you've got to find someone to install it.

I,ve got a second hand flying miata set up from the nutz forum for £1400 and I'm in the process of fitting it myself but as my car is not a daily driver I've got the time to plod along learning as I go.

Performance 5 is a good place to start if you live in the london area they fit both turbos and superchargers.

    Re: Turbo or Supercharger?

i got all my bits for about £1200 and spent £400 getting it fitted (10-12 hours)

    £190 getting a good r/road tune.

    And it reliable and quick.

I dont think the question should be about which is better, but which suits the way you want the car to drive.

Is that directed at Me? if so then yes ita a 1.8

a home brew kit of  a hundred seperate peices..well almost

    http://www.mx5oc.co.uk/forum/forums/t/21762.aspx

    gives the background

If you have just started doing trackdays do you need the extra power?

I only fitted it because id get held up by RX8's in the corners then the would poon me down the straights...not now they don't

Both Uma and the race car will be at the  Blyton Bash so I can take people out and they can get a sense of what the car does different from a standard one.

Once ive got the brakes bled and feeling firmer.

    see you then maybe?
