First Essential Power Upgrades for 1.6 MK1?

    Hi All

Had my 94 MK1 1.6 for a coiuple of months and really enjoying it! Love the engine gearbox combo and handling.

I don't want to go mad but would love to release a few more horses , so can I get the recommendations for the essential 1.6 power mods, is breathing number 1?

Do the exhausts release much and if so which has proven to be the best and do free flow filters offer much, and again if so which is recommended?

    Many thanks

Before starting anything give it a good service. Changing oils will make sure everything is running as smooth as possible!

After that do a timing advance, it doesnt release more power but make engine more responsive. I run at 18deg above TDC.

I have done de-cat, exhaust and filter. not sure how much power it releases, but sounds good!

Re: First Essential Power Upgrades for 1.6 MK1?

When I tried it at 18 Deg I got a lot of overfueling on quickly lifting of the throttle.

The pops and bangs and occasional fire ball from the exhaust was entertaining on track,

but not so great for the road.  Car dosnt do it all now im ChargedCry

    Back to Op

as advised to a full service and then look at breathing

are you going to fit a new filter or the old trivck of just drilling holes in your air box.

But First of all I would fit better brakes..Braking 20 yards closer to a corner is worth more than a few MPH in speed.

and yes give MOT a try...Blyton is a great circuit for first timers and there is usually a lot of mx5's there so you can chat to other owners and see what they have done to their cars.

£500 on a second hand turbo kit, job done Big Smile Nothing else makes much difference, but tinkering with timing advance and holes in the airbox does have the benefit of being free.

Outright speed isn't something MX5s are good for, it's all about the corners and the grinning.
