You do have a point out4lunch - about teh silly embarassed thing.
About 20 years ago - I was out with my mate in his MG - this was at Fullwell at the cross roads and we were heading to the beach. Open top MG me and my mate Dave driving - waiting at the lights..opposite side was another open top MG Midget. Dave gave this kind of wave like a salute almost....the other guy..........................

Re: To wave or not to wave that is the question
As a mk3 owner... member of the OC, and two other 5ing forums it's amazing what people bang on about mk3 owners A few days ago i was in a happy mood, topless driving ( as is mostly the case) after retrieving my car from a garage (Mazda sorting my footwell leak) when i spyed a silver mk1 enjoying the day, too. In a 30mph limit with only a car behind me i let loose a wave and flash> Did he respond? my eye... he did not. Please do not assume Mk3 owners are the ignorant ones. They come in all shapes of sizes and colours and MKs.... oh and locations. Been ignored in Scotland, your area, the NW, Midlands, all over Wales, south of England. We just gotta keep on waving to show people there's nowt wrong in doing it, regardless of who you are and what you drive.

keep the wave waving
NOW THATS A WAVE OF ALL WAVES
this past few days i have been out most mornings with the hood down and i have had waves and flashes in and around the torbay area frendly lot we are.
But today i was returning to the car and was getting my wife in (who hates it) as its to low for her but we had to use it as the zafira was in the spray shop haveing a scrach repaired.now my wife is dissabled and has to use a wheelchair and as i putting the chair in the boot (which fits snugly) i was being watched by a very elderly gent about 80 i would say, he came up to me and was admireing the car then he told me he uses a mk1 and he has had it from new he then said he had seen me on more than one occasion and he always pops his lights to me and others.
so if a 80 plus year old still pops his lights and waves there is hope for us all.

Re: To wave or not to wave that is the question
Good Evening ianandjan (Hamish?),
Many thanks for the special report which was very encouraging, loved it and could clearly see how pleased you were with the response and at five acknowledgements ""WOW"" I can understand that you needed to check on your bladder control with all that excitement. I think a report of this standard and excitement could clearly warrent you as a MX5OC special reporter. I must mention on a day when I was ignored by a few MX5s I did get a wave from a chap in a TR4 and then another in a MGB which leaves me wondering is it a roof down acknowledgement and not just a marque thing. Trying to get some time off to go on the run on Sunday are you going?

Re: To wave or not to wave that is the question
Hi Jo,
Now you are one of the first people that welcomed me to the MX5OC forum and one of the last people I'd want to offend in any way, my comments were only my opinion so far as to response from different Mks. Im pleased you are a Mk3 waver. i wish there was more like you in all Mks. One question I'd like to ask, was your present car your first MX5 or did you first have a later Mk which you were so pleased with it encouraged you to buy your Mk 3

Re: To wave or not to wave that is the question
hi out4lunch,
Has the discussion so far had any bearing on which Mk of 5 you may decide on, I can say since I've bought mine it really is my treasure, This is I think a valid point I waited a long time to get my car, years, family growing up paying off the mortgage etc. then when I had a bit dosh I veiwed many of them and asked aroung some owners what they thought. I liked the Mk2 and was told to go for one of the later ones possibly a 1.8 with s-vt engine (143bhp). This advice has been bourne out as I have a friend with a 1.6 Mk2 and if we are out driving then I have to hang back and wait for him not that I mind too much but I do like to blow the cobwebs off occainsionally.
Good luck with the hunting and dont accept anything less that what you want as there are some tired examples out there and when you get out and about get the roof down as much as possible and yes don't forget to wave

Re: To wave or not to wave that is the question
Good grief Chaps,
We have English on the thread, I don't suppose there is anyone who doesn't know but the esteamed gent is one of the founders of the "Old Gits Club". Now if this chap says wave then it is almost written in stone. The change of avatar had me going a bit as I'm sure he used to have the Union Flag, Not the Union Jack as according to Stephen Fry it can only really be called that if it's flown of the mast of a ship.
Welcome aboard English it's an honour sir.

Wish I knew how to do the quote user thing properly!!!!
When I wrote the comments about the likelyhood of waves from different Mks I was not trying to offend anyone who has a Mk which I thought was less likely to wave back , I did stress that if someone is enthusiastic about their car then it is very likely you will have your pleasant wave returned . The fact is if you look at the social hierachy I drew up I have actually placed the Mk2 in 3rd place the very Mk I drive saying they tend to be looked down on a bit from the nut and bolt owners in the Mk1s and the owners of the more expensive Mk3s, I did state enthusiasts were different whichever Mk they drove, just their seems to be more of them in the Mk1s, I'm not suggesting that everyone should go out and buy a Mk1 to be regarded as an enthusiast, I love my Mk2.5 & wouldn't swap it for an older or younger car.

Re: To wave or not to wave that is the question
(((Shoey)))
Could never be offended by you - no worries
This is my first mx5, first sports car, first RWD, first drop-top but have stated from about 25 years ago that in my time as a driver i wanted to own two types of motors... a jeep(4x4 will be fine) and a convertible one out of two thus far
Whilst i am no mechanic i am an enthusiast and she is my only means of private transport I love all MKs and have driven all (bar the 2.5) and enjoyed all experiences. My Step-dad now has a Eunos mk1.1.6 Lovely motor
 Storm before she was lowered
Also driven Benboy's 1.8 and helped him see that driving a mk3 could be fun

Hi Shoestring,
Your sport sounds like a hoot -- I'm still uncertain as ever really, going to arrange some more test drives for tomorrow and Saturday to try and refine my ideas.
Still going to be a difficult decision deciding which mk to go for - then the mission is going to be finding one with no rust!

yippee a question I can answer.
Once you click 'Reply' on the statement you want, highlight the part you want to quote then click 'Quote'
Alternatively clicking 'Quote' will quote all the statement.
Hope this explains properly.
As for waving.............I wave to all I see & a non waver is amusing to me as I wonder what they're thinking on their journey
