Rough cost to have a turbo conversion done professionally?

    Hi,

Im hopefully buying a 1.8 MX-5 this summer and would love to eventually turbo it once I have a few years NCB! Just wondering if anyone could tell me roughly how much it would cost in parts and labour to have it done at a garage?

Also, anyone know anywhere that would around South Yorkshire?

    Thanks!

That very much depends on how much power you want.

Moss supercharge kit is a relatively simple install, and takes 10 hours according to the book

BBR are charging £1000 to fit their offered turbo kit.

Steve at 5Speed (Nottingham) has achieved 400hp from his 1.6; give him a call to discuss it.

Fitting a turbo is only very slightly more mechnically involving than fitting a new exhaust. In fact I had a harder time removing bits I was throwing away than I did fitting the new parts.

If you can change an exhaust manifold you can fit a turbo. If it helps with estimating how much it'd cost - it took me a weekend to take off rusted on old exhaust bits, fettle iffy secondhand turbo bits, then bolt it all together. Someone without a crippled hand (and who owned a dremel) could have done it in a day, easy.

There could be other costs to think of as well.

Will the brakes/suspension need upgrading to cope with the extra power?  A 200 bhp RWD in the snow - sounds great fun

Then there is the dreaded "insurance" word - like the OP says - get a good few years NCB under your belt first.

I couldn't recommend 5 speed, I had a very bad experience with them on a turbo conversion they did for me on an old car.

Re: Rough cost to have a turbo conversion done professionally?

At skuzzle motorsport I offer such conversions. If the kit is good, then £1000 is more than easily achievable, but if the kit is poor and parts need modifying and fabricating, then it is a little more pricey.

To give you an idea, I can source and fit intercoolers for under £400. MegaSquirt ECU (which you are going to need to control the fuelling and ignition timing) for under £600 fitted and if its 10 hours to fit the turbo (not likely that long) £400 labour to fit.

What I dont like doing is supplying turbo kits. There are too many variables and im yet to find a perfect solution that everyone likes, therefore I leave the turbo, manifold and downpipe to the customer to find.

You will want to factor in a possible clutch and brake upgrade too though if shooting for more than about 160bhp.
