    Mk2 1.6/1.8 gearbox in a Mk1 1600

Needing to do a gearbox change on my early 1600 Mk1  plan to fit a Mk2 1.6/1.8 box (stronger internals same as Challenge cars now using) but !, the Mk2 box has a drive for an electronic speedo, obviously not compatible with my wire driven Mk1 speedo,    has anybody carried out the conversion & how did you get round the problem, thanks in anticipation (the next question will be has anybody got a good Mk2 gearbox lying around to convert into pound notes ?) I know Autolink etc have them but if I go to Andrew I will end up with a 6 speeder, oh joy !, B Rgds, Paul H, Bicester.

Curborough test day just before getting very close to the 1600 record, even more joy !

1999 1600 MX5 Racing Green (18J) currently standard apart from K & N induction system, Mk1 seats, TR Lane cage, Honda Civic wheels & a few internal refinements for comfort. Apexi big throttle body & six speed gearbox waiting in the garage for next years blitz to start hillclimbing again.

I've not tried it, but I think the cable speedo drive will go straight into the hole the electric speedo drive came out of.

    Re: Mk2 1.6/1.8 gearbox in a Mk1 1600

My V-Spec II has a big butchered hole cut out of the PPF frame where the speedo drive comes through, am wondering if there was a Mk2 gearbox fitted at some point? Thinking it has a low milage late Mk1 `box in there now.

Otherwise a fairly straight-forward swapThumbs up
