A bit of a shot in the dark but... the hinged cover on the armrest, which is the same walnut effect finish as the console and facia panel had blistered. I thought OK clean it all off and relacquer it. However when I did get the old finish off I discovered that the wood grain effect appeared to be a thin wrap of some sort which had then been lacquered. So I am left with a plain cover with traces of effect left behind but not enough to recreate a match for the rest of the console. 

My question is does anyone know how the effect was originally created, can it be recreated or should I just go for something completely different? It is a common flaw on these covers, my replacement one is going the same way.

The lacquer on the armrest of my Gleneagles blistered quite badly and started to peel off. I removed the remaing film, rubbed down the surface very lightly with wet and dry and used a can of spray clear lacquer to re-coat it. Suprisingly after 4 or so coats the finsh is pretty much like the original! Looking at what was left after I removed the original film I would never have thought it could look anything like the same but it did.

This is definitely a very common occurance and it's almost impossible to get hold of a reasonable replacement, I tried.

I was about to settle on replacing mine with a standard black and decided to give the re-lacquer a try as a last ditch attempt. I used a can of Halfords clear lacquer.

Thanks for that Andy. I'll give it a go. I have been looking at veneers but I doubt I could get it right. Let us spray. I'll let you know how I get on.

Well, I've just got a shinier piece of brown plastic now. The little figuring that was left is still visible though 'tis but a shadow of its former self. Looks like another solution is called for.
