Sunday on the Isle of Wight (again!) - July 1st

Back by popular request, and hoping for better weather this time  Smile  Bob Rawsthorne has kindly volunteered to lead another drive around the island (reverse direction this time) on Sunday July 1st. As people may want to travel on Portsmouth, Lymington or Southampton ferries or even make a weekend of it, we will again meet Bob at Bluebells Cafe at Briddlesford Farm on the IOW (PO33 4RY) in time to start the drive at 11:00am. Bluebells Cafe is open from 9:30am for breakfast etc. and is a 15 minutes drive from both East Cowes and Fishbourne ferry terminals.

There will be several stops including a break in the journey for lunch.

The provisional route will take in Bembridge, skirt Ryde and Newport then proceed on to Cowes/Gurnard.
There will be a short stopover at Newtown then onto Yarmouth, then Totland (no Needles this time) and Freshwater Bay, then onto Sun Inn at Huverstone for lunch.
Then back along the S Coast to Ventnor for a short stop before finishing at Godshill.

Please keep an eye on the forum here in case of any changes to the arrangements before the event, and I'm sure Bob will add some more details nearer the time.

It would be helpful if you could reply to this post if you plan to come along, just so Bob has some idea of numbers.

Re: Sunday on the Isle of Wight (again!) - July 1st

I'm leading this drive around the island (reverse direction this time) on Sunday July 1st, although use of forward gears is allowed!

Meet  at Bluebells Cafe at Briddlesford Farm on the IOW (PO33 4RY) in time to start the drive at 11:00am. Bluebells Cafe is open from 9:30am for breakfasts, coffee etc. and is a 15 minutes drive from both East Cowes and Fishbourne ferry terminals.

Those travelling from Pompey suggest either 09.00 or 09.30 Wightlink ferries.

Those travelling from Soton suggest  09.00 Red Funnel ferry.

Suggest book return 17.30 (either route). Also check out special offers on line nearer the time and try to book 10 days in advance. Current standard day return £43.50/42.50 WL/RF respectively.

There will be several stops including a break in the journey for lunch.

The  route will take in Culver Down, Bembridge, skirt Ryde and Newport then proceed on to Cowes/Gurnard.
There will be a short stopover at Newtown then onto Yarmouth, then Totland (no Needles this time) and Freshwater Bay, then onto Sun Inn at Huverstone for lunch.

Back along the S Coast to Ventnor for a short stop, then via Whitwell to finish    at Godshill, which is no more than 30 min drive from Fishbourne/East Cowes return ferries.

It would be helpful if you could reply to this post if you plan to come along, just so I have some idea of numbers. Sun Inn is currently booked for 20.

Re: Sunday on the Isle of Wight (again!) - July 1st

     Hi Bob

Thanks for organising a re-run of the island,we hope to be able to join you again on the 1st July.Smile

Sadly our roadster is off the road with a failed crankshaft nose at the moment!  We were due to have the crankshaft oil seal done as it was leaking badly and then out  of the blue the engine developed a serious rattle and we discovered the crank pulley had failed and is sadly terminal. Sad  Another crank nose/pulley failure story for the club records.

We have just managed to find a later complete second hand engine locally, so fingers crossed we will be back on the road ready for your re-run!

I will confirm with you asap to let you know for the Sun Inn booking etc.

    all the best

    John & Julie Wilkinson
