    Eezi bleed

     Hi all,

    Just wondering if anyone has used the Gunson eezi bleed on the clutch? Wanted to know if one of the adaptor caps provide fitted the clutch master cylinder?

     You need a special large cap for the MX5 brake master cylinder not included in the kit. I think the clutch master cylinder which is much smaller should use one of the supplied caps. I will check for you tonight.

     Thanks mate, just didnt want to buy one if the caps didnt fit.

     My advice would be not to take this infernal contraption anywhere near a car.  They run from the tyre pressure which needs to be deflated to around 10 p.s.i. it is far too high, the caps leak, brake fluid everywhere, the pressure can blow the reservoir off the cylinder, ( they are only push fit seals) I have known one extreme case where the master cylinder seals were reversed.  Much better to pump the fluid through with the clutch pedal or use a vacuum bleeding tool.

    First I agree with Geoff as I was not amazed at mine.

    Second the kit has a 45mm internal diameter cap and the MX5 clutch is approx 42mm. Gunson do not do one that fits even as an extra.

    They also do not do a big cap for the the MX5 brake master cylinder.

    Gunson sell a multipurpose one and is on ebay here

    I have a vacuum bleeder and that is excellent. I bought it last year.

     I thought they would have improved from the one I had in the early 80's, but obviously not! That was just about useable. Oh well I'll go with pumpin the pedal. Smile

     Too complicated even if it did work just for occasional use imho.

    The Vizi Bleed (clear pipe with valve on the end) for a fiver from Halfords is the one to get. Used one for years and just done 2 complete car brake fluid changes single handed with no problem at all; fit pipe, open nipple once, pump a few times, top up, few more pumps, close and onto next wheel, that quick.

    Should be fine for single handed use on the clutch too though trapped air can be a problem. Try getting the car jacked or on a slope so the nipple is at the highest point on the slave.

     Just had a look in Haynes for you and they suggest another way for the clutch if you have a helper.

    Get helper to press and hold the pedal to floor, open bleed nipple until flow stops, close bleed nipple, then release clutch pedal,

    repeat cycle until no more air through bleed pipe.

    I can see the reason for this would be to allow fluid to only be pumped one way, the mastercyl then being closed by the pedal being held down. Opening the bleed nipple would allow the spring return of the clutch to drive trapped fluid and air back out the nipple and not back up the pipe to the master.

    I didn't get the "deluxe" kit with the plastic bottle because a) it costs more and b) I have plenty of suitable jars n blocks of wood / bricks and c) most importanly you can see any bubbles present with a jar

     The technique of closing the bleed nipple every time the clutch pedal is depressed is the best way to avoid air being drawn into the system.  Even with the 'one way valve' bleed tubes it is still possible for air to be drawn in around the threads of the bleed nipple.  This can also be a problem when using a vacuum brake bleeding tool.   A little grease or waxoyl round the nipple helps and also prevents the nipple seizing.

    Yes but I'd only use red rubber grease in case it is drawn into the cylinder.

    I've not done MX5 but have done MGB/C many times and they are known for same air problem as the slave lies horizontal and you can end up drawing an air bubble back and forth up the line.

    Mostly they were ok but one just stayed soggy then cleared the next day by itself so I guess a bit of use and time let the bubble float up to the m/cyl. Tap the slave gently, try not to introduce air when topping up the master, and periodically side step your foot off the depress pedal to let it come back with a bang and rattle the air are ideas I used too. 

    I know the Vizi bleed has a valve and is fantastic on brakes but haven't used it on the clutch so would tend to go the way of a plain pipe and close the nipple each stroke as Haynes and Geoff advocate.
