    Sill Rust!

    Hello All,

There seems to be a sudden epidemic of sill rust from reading this forum at the moment, unfortunately I can include my car as well.  It has the usual rust on the rear of the O/S sill, it has definitely appeared from inside out, as I have been mointoring it for some time.  I have taken it to a bodyshop this morning, to get the work done, I have used them before, with a different car, and always been pleased with their work.  I must admit I was expecting £300 - £400 for this repair, however, I was pleasantly suprised when he said he thought it would cost a maximum of £200 (for cash), he confirmed that this would entail, cutting the affected area out an patching with a new piece, treating the rust, and obviously repainting.  Coincidentally, he said that he also had a car identical to mine, model and colour, in for the same job!

I will let you all know how I get on, although as someone has already posted on this forum, "the proof of the pudding" will be in 2 -3 years time...

    Cheers

    V.

I had mine done in early February. It seems like an epidemic, especially on the Mk 2.5  Cry

That's only one side...and I have to help...and he owes me a favour. And if it goes beyond 2 hours, I have to furnish him with another £20. But yes, it's always good to know a mechanic. Thumbs up

Mine is still at the very early stages though, just bubbling through right at the back end - it'll probably end up with a plate maybe 10x10cm. Plus the black sill keeps the price down.

Epidemic indeed, mine is bubbling too, must be something in the air? all that rain maybe. Or all that salt that was put down for the snow that never came, unlike last year when hardlly any went down and we all know what happend with the snow. Sure that the prolonged dry spell before the hose pipe ban keept the salt on the road`s instead of it being washed away. Just a theoryThinking

Conspiracy theory....? --- What really annoys me is that the Mazda anti corrosion warrenty on the Mk 2.5 is 6 years and guess what....  I noticed the rust just starting to bubble through, 1 -2 months after the warrenty expired, I tried to argue the case with Mazda UK but they didn't want to know :-(

That`s great Jon, you can see exactly what`s going on in the sill and learn something into the bargain, hope it`s only minor stuff neededThumbs up

Yeah, I'm happy spinning spanners, but grinding and welding and all that I'm pretty clueless so will be a good experience. He's done about a dozen mx5 rear sills before so he hopefully knows what he's dealing with. We'll see when we get in there.

The only issue with this arrangement is that I have to wait until he has a spare evening and go down there out of hours in my scruffs.

    Re: Sill Rust!

With mine, I first noticed a lumpiness in the paint texture around 2006 which got gradually more. It took a long time before a noticeable hole appeared - at the beginning of this year, discolouration about a year before that. The problem was quite slow-growing. At first, I just thought it was the texture of the paintwork but with hindsight it was the gradual formation of the paint bubbles which indicate a pinprick hole.

You think they plucked the 6 year figure out of the air? Not 5 years...not 7 years...? They know full well how long it takes for rust to begin to show.
