I would be interested, depending the pricing. The service spec looks really good and seems to involve the important items

     Hi Paul,

We already have a number of good mechanics in the Area, so I suggest you may be trying to tap into a challenging market.

You may want to advise a bit more about your business? I assume you're a VAT registered operation with appropriate premises?

    Hi Rich

I am not a business just an MX5 Lover who already does servicing work for friends and family with MX5s.

I work from my own garage and was just thinking about offering the service to anyone that is interested.

My Idea is not to step on any toes i just know that with the financial climate the way it is alot of MX5 owners cant afford to service there cars as often as they would like.

I Just thought i would see if there was any interest

Why does Paul need to be VAT registered ? Surely until his turnover meets the threshhold for VAT registration this is of little consequence ? I agree that he needs to be working from appropriate premises but fail to see how that is any business of ours , there are mechanisms in place to regulate trading conditions.

I think those rules went into the bin a while ago; there are other posters on this forum quite openly referring to their customers etc, so I assume they are taking payment. MX5OC members are allowed to place trade ads, though I suppose the OP at the moment is only undertaking market research, rather than actually advertising.

For anyone in doubt about the rules:

    10. Advertising
    General Sale Ads
    a) Advertising is allowed by MX-5 OC Members only. These must be posted in the relevant for-sale forum.
    b) Any ads posted in the wrong place will be moved without notice.
    c) Any "How much do you think my car is worth" type threads will be removed unless posted by a club member.
    d) Images provided or linked to the advert must be of the actual item in question. All adverts must include a price, either firm or negotiable.
    e) Members should avoid placing personal contact details (email, phone number, address) within an Ad. Please take appropriate precautions if arranging to meet.
    f) Ads placed by non-members as replies to Wanted ads, or to Members sale ads will be removed.
    g) Similarly, ads placed in other thread by non-members (offers to sale etc) will be removed.
    h) We recognise that on occasion, through the natural progression of a thread, that a member might identify that they have a particular part etc that may be of interest to the original poster. Please restrict such offers to a PM.
    i) eBay: links to eBay auctions, for the purposes of providing further information, may be placed with the advertisement but the item must be fully described in the initial post. This applies to advertisements in all the MX-5 related For Sale sections. Links to eBay auctions are not permitted in the “Off Topic Sales" forum.

    Wanted Ads
    a) Wanted Ads can be placed by all registered users of the forum, and must be posted in the appropriate "MX-5 & Roadster Parts Wanted" forum.

    Trade Advertising
    a) Trade advertising by OC members is fine, and must follow the above rules.
    b) Unauthorised trade advertising in posts will not be tolerated.
    c) Forum users who are members of the MX-5 OC may (at the discretion of the moderators) have one line of normal text in their signature with their company name, description of service/products and/or a link to their web page. No other contact details or information is permissible. Any web sites linked to in this manner must be for MX-5 related products and/or be of interest to the readership.
    d) Avatars, and images in signatures, advertising a company are not allowed.
    e) Repeated placements of Trade Adverts (more than two) will result in a ban.
    f) Soliciting of products using the forums PM/mailing system is also not allowed, unless information is specifically requested for by a forum user.

    Re: Mx5 servicing

Key issue here is the OP a qualified mechanic? And familiar with all Mk's? Freelance Mazda started off in his own garage while searching for a decent unit, so questions about his business are irrelevant, and when I had a Chevanne, a guy who worked at and from home was one of the best mechanics I've ever known, but he was qualified. As to the service area being saturated - it ain't, that smacks of protectionism, and the known (Ferrari) qualified mechanic isn''t even recommended by the local area!

Questions such as is the OP registered as a business, are his neighbours in favour, or has he planning permission are irrelevant, they are his problem - not ours, but qualification is essential, as is labour cost and material mark-up, if they pass the test, then his business is welcome. He should bear in mind that advertising is also essential, as unless you do a net search, small business has limited clientele. There's a lot of MX's in and around Nottingham, all desperate for a good reasonably priced mechanic, so he needs to show us he can do it. Dealer prices are unreasonable - that's why he's needed. Part time is unacceptable, if he intends to make it a business, then do so - full time! Current VAT rate for persons supplying services is - €37,500 in the case of persons supplying services, (Taken from the C & E website) so he will have to pay VAT on anything he buys, but until he reaches that turnover point, he cannot charge VAT on his labour, but he has to recover the VAT paid to suppliers as part of his labour/parts charge, including any additional overhead costs involving business costs which should include insurance for liability, fire and theft? Not for his car - for ours!

Non dealers cannot enter recognisable entries in the service book (except for Sam Goodwin, who I understand is authorised by Mazda to do this) which can be a problem for owners with cars still under warranty, but also for owners who may at some future point wish to sell the car, as buyers like to see full service records. In my case - that's immaterial, as the car hasn't been serviced at a dealer for quite a few years.

So - a home based handyman with non of the above is I'm afraid whistling Dixie, you have to make your qualifications known, and back it up with a businesslike approach, your intentions may be honest, but there are too many cowboys around, not that I'm tarring you with that brush. Give it some serious thought.

Five is Alive 2002 Mk2.5 Sport, with added Mazda body kit, 15 inch Rota Circuit 8 with Toyos, rescued wood rim steering wheel from a crashed Arizona. Air intake mods to come (one day!) Hard Dog Deuce rollbar. and HT (permanent fixture!) - Its still a sportscar.
