    Car Won't Lock

My MX5 Phoenix SE (2002)  - is refusing to lock with either remote fob or key. Any suggestions/advice would be appreciated

When I attempt to lock the vehicle you can hear the lock mechanism operate then a quieter noise which sounds like the lock returning

Just prior to this problem becoming apparent the alarm went off when I had locked the car so I unlocked the car and the central locking  hasnt really worked since

In the short term I am intending to disable the central locking by removing the fuse and possibly the immobiliser fuse if its possible.

    Thanks for reading

I'd guess at a faulty drivers side door lock mechanism, I've known of it before. You can remove the door lock fuse but not the immobiliser fuse.

    Re: Car Won't Lock

Yea silly me what sort of Alarm system could be disabled in this way!!!

I will investigate the lock when I get chance, already removed the fuse and this has stopped the problem, now the keys work only, bit of an incovenience but I had wondered how this effects the immobiliser? How is it set etc.

Having only had previous experience of Mini's, MGs and other easy to understand cars I am finding the modern electrics a bit daunting, coded keys, computers etc.  I have sent off for the Paul Hardiman MX5 Renovation Manual, hope this will include some guidance on electrics

If the doors can't lock properly for some reason, it unlocks again to make it obvious to you that it isn't secure.

Possibly some lubing will help, or maybe a new solenoid is required.

I advocate regular oiling of door locks, say once a month. A good spray will disperse water and any accumulated dirt.  Minimises wear and tear and troubles such as the above.  This used to be part of a service along with door, bonnet and boot hinges.  Nobody seems to bother now!  Until a hinge binds, then snaps!
