Heated Rear Screen Wiring Conundrum ..

    hi all.

    1996 Geneagles MX5

Just had new hood fitted with heated sceen and spent yesterday trying to wire it up..  ended up cutting the lawn instead...

    what i have is:

DASHBOARD:-   4 port switch with 4 wires  one pair is wired into illuminatiion cicuit, no problems there..
one of the others is thin yellow and completes circuit with other ( earth) when switch is on. no voltage at either with ign on.

also note the abscence of anything resembling a switched  feed to a relay  :-(

BOOT:-  fuse holder with 2 fuses in , 1 for power aerial one for HRW  ok there then  HRW circuit live with ign off
THERE IS A RELAY THERE with    feed of red wire in ( live all time - from fuse holder)  out is red/white wire  live on ign on - indicating relay is permenantly "on"
this red/white wire goes to plug behind passenger seat.
other 2 wires in relay... blue feed  live on ign( always)  on and ground.

there is also another female socket next to fuse holder with two live feeds on ign on and 2 earths    not sure what these are for

PARCEL SHELF :  red/white wire  live on ign on      black wire  earth an thin yellow wire, which if touched to red/white wire ie 12v illuminates warning light on dash showing HRW on.( provide ddash switch is on)

so there we are folks the problems are
    1. no feed to relay from HRW dash switch
    2. relay permenantly "on" due to mysterious blue wire feeding 12v to switch side.
    3. no idea where blue wire comes from, its in the loom

i have read through various posts, looked at wiring diagrams but cannot understand my setup

i am thinking of just disconnecting the yellow wire and partner  at switch and using those termianal to feed a 12v trigger to the relay
no reason i can see why it has to be switched, if i then connect those two wires together it will illuminate the dash light  when screen is on
if i connect yellow to red/white at Parcel shelf.

has anyone any idea what i have here or is it a one off cocked wire up

Ok Calm down buddy ,have you checked the earth block point at the back end on the passenger side, follow the rear deck plug wiring under the rear deck carpet, OK

ok i am calm :-)  at least you read the message properly , thanx

    earth block point is fine.

i suspect the car has been wired incorrectly as

    1) no 12v feed to dashboard switch to go to relay ( as it should)

    2) relay in boot is permenantly fed by 12v on switch side from blue wire
guess my only choice is to run a 12 v feeed to dash and then through to back relay ?

    Disapproving wave

Right i have been out testing on the Mk 1 that is here, the relay in the boot...red is live, all the time the red and white is switched live by the switch, the switch in this Mk 1 is the later type which is a click on switch not the earlier rocker type and as a blue wire live, which sounds the same as what you have , is it powering a after market heated soft top glass heated window or a hard top?

Either it is wired wrong at the plug on the rear shelf or the relay is shot?

    Hi M-M

Thanx for your continued support here

Ok so you say your relay is switched live by a blue wire, same as mine

But it appears your blue wire comes from the switch in the dash yes?
..whereas mine doesn’t and is live all the time, so something else is feeding it
I have no live feed to the dash switch at all, apart from the lighting

I am going to run a wire from dash to rear relay myself, its the only way to sort this out

    Thanx anyway Geek

Re: Heated Rear Screen Wiring Conundrum ..

If you hang on untill weekend i'll be picking up a early roadster with the rocker type which i will test for you ,but they will not be far off the same.

Are you powering a hard top or an after market glass soft top rear window?, does it have the OE pig tail on or some fettled male spade ends pushed into the socket?

Re: Heated Rear Screen Wiring Conundrum ..

powering an after market glass windowed soft top

plug on window was totally different than original mazda plug so cut both off and fitted a small plug and socket from maplins

just spoken to mechanic at  Dandy cars   he says should be 12v feed to dash switch then onto relay no idea why my relay is on all time
too hot to do wiring so will wait til WE and hear back from you
