    My 1997 MK1 'Classic'

Well, after selling my first 5 and thinking I was over the love affair with these little cars, it turned out I couldn't live without one....

When this one came up for sale by a local enthusiast, and having previously known the car and how well it had been looked after, I just knew I had to have it.

The 'classic' has always been my favourite UK special edition. My aim is to mod it lot's, but try and keep it as oem as possible whilst retaining the original theme.....

    First mods were:

Replace OEM suspension with Meister R coilovers (See I've already failed to keep it OEM)
    Runabout fuel lid
Refurb original 'classic' alloys in a sparkly gunmetal grey
    Fit OEM front lip spoiler
De-badged nose cone (needs filling and painting)
Fit clear side repeaters and reflectors to the front (will replace rears with red ones, de-tango sidelights)
Remove number plate plinth and re-locate smaller no. plate lower down.

Lot's more to come and will update progress as I go along, some pics below, all comments good and bad appreciated.....

    Regards

    Re: My 1997 MK1 'Classic'

Thanks. To be fair it's only covered 61k miles and has been garaged most of it's life, hence the condition. Can't wait to give it a thorough 'detail' and get it gleaming....

Have you seen the thread about the 8k miles P Reg? Can't think why people buy a 5 then do nothing with it.

Barmy!  Enjoy modding your car; loads you can do....

That looks lovely. Nice and low, and loving the black.

You may now know, as it may have been the previous owner, but how is the front plate attached so low? Are custom brackets used? Looks awesome. I'd put mine there but there are 5 bazooka sized holes in the bumper where the plinth used to be!

Thanks for the kind words. The number plate is just drilled straight into the bumper, so you have to make sure you're happy where it is! I now have holes where the plinth was, but I also removed the badge from the nose cone, so it will be filled, smoothed and painted.....

Having owned a classic myself, they really are great cars, and extremely comfortable!

Your wind-deflector is interesting, is that off a mk2? and does it fold down or is it permanent, looks very similar to the S2000 deflector.

    Re: My 1997 MK1 'Classic'

They are great, and have always been my favourite UK special edition. The wind deflector/style bar is for a mk1, but I believe it will also fit a mk2.

The glass deflector does fold down, but I always leave it up, works great. These are very rare now, and a real quality piece of kit.

Whilst it is comfortable, I don't find the seats very supportive. I think a pair of elise seats may be in order, but re-trimmed in black leather and red stitching to keep the 'classic' colour scheme.....

    It looks very smart mate.....

I'm now the proud owner of mk1 Classic...

We need to start a themed group for them unless there is one already?

Mine has only done 30k miles and is totally original...so far!

Thanks mate. Don't think there is a specific thread for 'Classic' owners, so think it's a good idea to start one!

30k miles?! Wow, where did you find that? Thought mine was low at 61k miles........

Thats a lovely looking car, you nailed the wheel colour, really suits it. Guessing the wing is part of the 'classic' edition? If not i think it would look better without it.

Not sure how we start a 'Classic' group in terms of an area on the forum, do you or anyone else know? There'll be at least 2 of us in the group anyway :)

I found her...that's Juliette..ahem... in London. She's been in the same family for quite a few years and has been used as a second car.
