    Recommendation needed

     Hi all,

Have just bought a mk1 mx5 uk car and had a lot of fun driving home at 10pm roof down :) .  However, it has the worst head unit I have ever seen or heard.  Does anyone have a recommendation for a head unit with rear USB with full ipod control ?

The door speakers are upgraded JVC items which sound ok, but am not sure if they are better replaced too - any thoughts ?

    Thanks

    Rich

Pick any stereo with the controls you want. I hate to say it but no stereo will ever sound great in a 5 or any other convertable for that matter. I'm sure you'll get some recommendations from what others have.

I run a pioneer with a line in through the cd changer input on the rear that terminates in the ashtray for my ipod. Fits nicely and is very discreet when parked.

Yes indeed just choose one you like. I usually go for Pioneer too as I've always had good experience with them, but frankly they all use the pretty much same components so it doesn't matter much. That said I'm currently using a £50 Alba which sounds amazing for the money, has an SD card slot & USB slot (much more useful than iPod connectivity) but also has an optional ipod connector if you want. Frankly, an expensive head unit (and iPod connector hanging there) in a soft-top is a recipe for a windy drive home and a £600 bill.

The secret to it...is headrest speakers. £30 for 2 pairs of 4" pioneers was the best money I ever spent.

Oh also be warned that the rumour mill is suggesting apple will be moving away from the 30 pin connector at the next generation of tech so you could end up being tied to your current ipod/phone
