    Mk2 gearboxes that fit a Mk1 1.6?

    Hi all,

Could anyone let me know which gearboxes are a straight fit into a 1990 MX5? I have read somewhere that a MK2 1.6 unit drops straight it, does anyone know if the ratios are the same or if it is any stronger than the earlier units?

    Thanks in advance all,

    o :)

All mk1/2/2.5 boxes are the same and interchangeable

The six speed has a lower top gear

Mk2 has electronic speedo drive, but mechanical can be fitted

    Cheers Richard,

If you were in my position and looking to replace the gearbox in am early 1.6 MX5, which one would you go for?

    Thanks again,

    o :)

    Cheers for the responses,

What are the mechanical differences between the MK1 and MK2 units except for the elecric speedo drive?

Are the MK2 units tougher? Slicker? Heavier?

    Thanks again,

    o :)

    Re: Mk2 gearboxes that fit a Mk1 1.6?

The shift turrets are different with the Mk2 box having two detent slots on the gearknob ball to the Mk1s one, the wiring connectors for the reversing light switch is different but the switches are inter-changeable and the top right (viewed from below facing forwards) bell-housing casting is a slightly different shape and as such the wiring/pipe clip that lives on that bolt needs to be flattened a bit for it to go onto the Mk2 box.

Otherwise all 5speed ratios are the same, as stated above, get a nice genuine low-milage unit to go in and you can`t go too wrongThumbs up
