    Boot bag - any good?

    Hey all,

Considering getting a Boot Bat (http://www.boot-bag.com/) to replace my chrome rack, which has taken off some paintwork and takes ages to fit...  Has anyone got one, if so, any issues with it?

    Ta muchly for any help.

    Peter

I bought one a couple of years ago for camping - it's ideal

it's lower than a boot rack and feels more secure, plus you can take it off when you've arrived at your destination Yes

Re: Boot bag - any good?

I've just bought one 'cos I'm planning on going away for a week in late July... I haven't actually used it yet though, so I can't really comment. I will say that it's a bit smaller than I was expecting, however I expect I'll be able to stuff it very full and bulging if I have to!

So, yeah. Looks good, but not actually used it yet.

Asuming that you're now back, any comments on the Boot Bag? (I'm thinking of getting one).

Even cheaper is to make your own from a canvas tent bag which I have. I bought some of the soft mesh rubber stuff to sit it on the bootlid and straps around it and bobs your uncle job done.

Oh yes and it matches my tan upholstery.

Re: Boot bag - any good?

So there you go. Now I will describe the making.

1 Canvas tent pole bag cost £1.50 from camping store (very strong and waterproof). It has a drawstring at the top end, This folds over to make it waterproof.

3 straps (cribbed from holdalls) in all, one going side to side attached to D rings and 2 front to back also D rings.

The front to back straps I cut in half and inserted a 6inck lenth of 2" width elastic to make it doubly adjustable as well as the slide adjusters you can see.

It worked very well when we went away. Clean clothing on the way out and laundry bag on the return.

Of course it is sufficiently waterproof to choose exactly what you want in it. And yes it did pour with rain on the return journey so it was tested.

Re: Boot bag - any good?

Sorry - I completely forgot about this thread! My initial impressions were fairly accurate. It's a bit smaller than I expected - certainly smaller than MC5Joy's bag in that picture! That said, it still gives a significant amount of extra space - I managed to fit clothes and similar for a week away into it with no problems, which was lucky as there was a duvet mostly filling the boot!

The straps hold it in place very firmly indeed. I tried shaking it, and couldn't get it to move at all, which is certainly a good sign! Sadly, the waterproofing wasn't quite 100% - we drove through a couple of /very/ heavy rainstorms, and when I arrived, a few items felt slightly damp, however not enough so for it to be a significant problem. Oh, and when it's on, you can't see a thing in the rear view mirror - it blocks it completely!

All in all, I'm very happy with it and will certainly be using it a lot more in the future!

Re: Boot bag - any good?

Hi, I posted this reply on another thread but have realised it is more relevant here!

" I can also recommend the Boot Bag from  www.boot-bag.com very easy to fit, easily holds clothes for a fortnight, still allows (restricted) rear vision - depending on how full you stuff it.

Security is a bit of an issue, but it's so easy to put on and off that we just popped it in the passenger footwell when we stopped en route.

On a long weekend away, having packed it with clothes, we found we still had a few inches above the other luggage in the boot, so it travelled inside!  This makes it very versatile, as it is just the right size and shape to fill those last extra inches, and if it doesn't fit just strap it on top."

It was pointed out that it should only be used with soft tops, it may get in the way of the folding hard top.
