    RUSTY SILLS ON CAR

    Hi.

My mx5 has just been moted and passed, but I was advised on a rusty sill appearing and probably will not pass next year. So I am looking for any information or recommendations from any members who may have had this repair done. I am enquiring where I can have a new sill fitted and approximate costs. I do not mind having to travel a distance to have it done to a high standard. Wife can't stand seeing the rust appear on her car. Please help.

I had both my sills done last year for a cost of £400.00 ..... job was perfect.

Whereabouts are you ? If you're anywhere near me then I can recommend the place I went to. Yes

     Hi Ady.

Thank you for the reply. I live in Reading, Bershire, but I sometimes travel over into Colchester and Clacton. So I would still be interested in the place where you had both your sills done. Does the price include the respray repair afterwards and how long did the job take overall.

    Thanks geoff.

For your reply. I did read the latest copy of  STHT and it sounds like too big a job for me, so I think I will let someone try who probably has a better idea that me.

    Thanks again.

    Dave.

    Re: RUSTY SILLS ON CAR

    Hi davem,

My 1991 'Limited Edition' MX-5 failed it's MOT in June 2007 because of badly corroded Sills on both sides of the car. The inner and the outer sills (about 14 inches from the rear wheels) needed replacing.  I found a company in Southampton, who cut away the corroded areas and fabricated new parts on the premises. He welded the replacement sections in, and primed them ready for painting. (Painting has to be done elsewhere, he only does the welding stuff). The car passed it's MOT with flying colours. The guys at the MOT station were amazed at the quality of the work.  The cost was £200.00 (not including the final painting). I recommended him to another club member who's car needed sill replacement, and he had his car done there. He was also delighted with the result. I can give you details of the company if you would like to contact them.

     Hi

Ive just discovered penitrative rust on my nearside rear sill. Ive only had the car since May and love it. Its a 52 plate Mk2.5. Is it still covered by the Manufactures body warrenty? I would like to hope so but fear the worst. Have any other members suffered this problem on such a relitivaly new car.  Trebor

    Re: RUSTY SILLS ON CAR

Well I have now done some investigating into getting my sills done locally and I have finally decided on a company. I asked for both sides to be done and as I have a red Mk 2 MX-5, year 2000 which appears to have the common fault in red cars of this year, the paint is breaking up and white spots appearing. I also then asked for a full respray for the car. The quotes I have had have varied from £450 cash to £2550 all in. I would advise anyone who has this rust problem to try and get it repaired as soon as possible, if you leave it too long you will then probably have to replace the front and rear panels, which involves alot of welding and possibly exposing other metal surfaces to rust quicker.

The company I decided on was a company in Basingstoke, who deal with Top Spec cars. The quote was for £150 each side for repair and prime and then £800 pounds for a full strip and respray of whole car. I looked at their work on the Ferraris and Porshes they had in their repair shop and they looked impressive. So I thought £1100 all in was not a bad deal. (We will have to wait and see when finished).

I hope this helps anyone who may be out there who may have the same problem as me. There are cheaper quotes out there but you have to decided whether you are going to keep the car for a while( Thats Us) or whether you intend to sell it soon after, which will mean you dont have to have such a good job done.

Hope it helps. If you have any further questions on this subject, email me and I will try to help.

    Dave

    Re: RUSTY SILLS ON CAR

I have the start of rusting on my 91' MX5, but at this stage I feel that just cutting out the bad section and patching in a new bit will do the job for a year or three. As I live within driving distance of S'ton the name and number of your guy would be useful. Smile

    Re: RUSTY SILLS ON CAR

    Hi Mike

The company that I am using is called CRYSTAL CARRIAGES in Basingstoke, Telephone No 01256333600. The company is run by 2 gentleman called Ian & Phil. Their details are on the internet at present as a car sales company.

My car is due to go in at the end of the month for the repairs. I wish you all the best and will update you on my repair and respray at a later date.

    Dave.

    Re: RUSTY SILLS ON CAR

My car has just passed its MOT with Rusty Sills on advisor. How was your experience with Crystal Carriages Dave? I'd probably use them if they're reccommended, as I'm in Wokingham.

    Re: RUSTY SILLS ON CAR

     Hi

Sorry I have not got too you sooner, I have had a few things on my plate recently.

Anyway the repair on my car, well the company had the car for 3 weeks in the end and the respay was absolutley fantastic. The car was completely stripped and resprayed completely including the hardtop with the rust repair done on the sill and plated for all in £1500. I know this may sound like a lot, but the job was done to very hard standards.

I was hoping to join the drive in March around the New Forest, but once again another commitment has arisen.

    Hope this helps.

    Dave.
