Hi from a newbie

Hi all

Have just joined the club and thought I should introduce myself. My name is Steve and Im in the South East London area. Haven't got an MX5 as yet - still looking to buy my first (do have a Mazda6 tho). So big question - any advice on which model to go for, I really like the look of the Mk1 with its pop up lights (reminds me uf my youth watching the Lotus Elan's), but have been told that the Mk2/2.5 is a better car!!! Any help or suggestions will be gratefully received

Hi Guys

A 2003 Sport with the 6sp box. Seems in really good condition bar a little mark on the bonnet but shouldn't cost too much to be resprayed and its something i can live with till thats done.

Its got the heated leather seats which i'll probably be replacing with some basic cloth seats as being fairly tall the additional bulk makes things a little more comfortable. Bought it from a guy who's previously owned multiple MX5's and certainly seemed to know what he was doing so that gave me re-assurance since its my first and my knowledge of cars is limited. New brakes/springs were fitted and theres no signs of rust in the usual places. He talked me through how to unblock any drain holes so this gave me the confidence it's been looked after.

Initially the plan was to buy one and use it for the summer along with a trip to France and then sell it for not too much of a loss, we'll see how that goes though. Only stickler so far was insurance is a lot more than i initially planned as i was factoring in the wifes no claims into the quote and didn't realise they were locked to one car rather than the person so couldn't use them for this.

Picking it up tonight so can't wait!

Mk3 Suspension - issues?

Hi,

Can anyone provide any help or advice regarding what I think are suspension/ride issues with our Mk3 launch edition 2.0 sport? With 71K on the clock our NC has done excellent service as my wife's regular commuter car since we acquired it in 2007. However, I'm convinced the ride quality has deteriated over time and I seem to feel every bumb and undulation. The back end seems 'lose' and noisy. I suspect worn dampers might be the problem, or may be worn bushes, but wondered if what the most likely cause might be for a car with this mileage.

I've become even more convinced there is a problem when I had chance to drive a three year old NC with only 2500 on the clock (yes 2500!) and the ride and handling was 'chalk and cheese'.

I should say that I replaced all four anti-roll droplinks about 6 months ago when one was found to be broken.

As I say, any advice or pointers would be appreciated, including what dampers to go for should they be needed.

Currently looking for a mk3 or 3.5. Seen a few, one turned out to be a cat d, owner stated hpi clear to, i wasnt best pleased when i checked. Prices are all over the place at the moment and rc's are thin on the ground so waiting for right one.

Hello!

I joined the OC less than a year ago, after I got a Eunos Roadster, but I haven't signed up as I tend to be clear of the internet most of the time! I came along to the Britcar event last year, if anyone else was there - I was the one person who came on a bike rather than the car (garage time). I have to say, the club really gets things organised well, both me and my fiancee really enjoyed the event!

Anyway, I won't beat around the bush, unfortunately since I've moved north, and now travel by train I can't justify having an MX5 and Aprilia, and unfortunately I much prefer riding the bike! Therefore, my motive for posting on the forum is really to give you first pickings on what I think is a great example of a Roadster! I won't talk more about it here, I'll put an ad up in the Classifieds.

So on that errr, bombshell? Hello everybody, how do you do!

My First MX-5...a new adventure!

Hello everybody,

As with the previous poster in this area, I have literally only just paid for my membership, so please be kind :)

I put down a deposit for my MX-5 on 2nd March and am just waiting on paperwork from the good ol' DVLA to come back so I can collect my car. She is a 2013 1.8 SE in True Red and a beautiful car if I do say so myself. This is my first MX-5 and only my second car (again as per the last poster I am leaping from a 2003 VW Polo 1.2 E :p), I am really looking forwards to owning an MX-5 having read, and heard, lots of lovely things about them :)

New Eunos Driver in Tatty White! Worcestershire

Hey all!,

I'm Tom and I'm 21, I've always hankered for an MX5, so when a local Eunos turned up.....I just had to have it!!

Its solid, has been lowered on coilovers and has (Not to everyones taste; and im not sure either) orange wheels, which have just been refurbished. The worst part about it is the body work, it does need going over with a spray gun and some elbow grease in the winter, but for now I just want to enjoy it!

I'm very lucky that my Dad co owns a classic car company called 'RetroMarques', that maintains, repairs, stores, sources and sells classic cars, I work as an apprentice alongside him. So whos knows I may be able to help set up any work that a fellow Mx5 club member needs. (www.retromarques.co.uk, take a look)

We also have a body shop in Malvern, Worcestershire, called 'Tony Williams Bodyshop', that can do any work from dent and scratch removal to major panel refitment, paint and insurance work. (www.tonywilliamsbodyshop.co.uk)

Hey,

Bought Kayleigh a couple of weeks ago and loving it.

As usual with all of the ones I looked at it's got a little rust under the sills which I'm going to get looked at asap, but of course there's a big list of things I want to get for her.

A little gutted I joined too late to make the spring rally as it seems incredible! But looking forward to meeting new people soon.

Hello folks, just thought I'd pop my head in...

As of Saturday just gone, I'm the proud owner of a Mk1 1.6 Monza in BRG, she needs a bit of TLC but crucially is almost entirely rust free as far as I can see, actually looks like she's been sat in a shed for a few years. It's my dream car and I plan to keep this and get it back to full health, with no (well, few) expenses spared. As I said to my friend, I want to be sitting on my porch when I'm 70 with this in my garage in immaculate condition. :)

Drove her all the way up from Kettering to Aberdeen and had no dramas, aside from the traditional 'I've just bought a RWD drop-top' heavy sleet and hail for ten miles or so. Looking forward to the work starting, here's the preliminary list (comments and advice welcome):

- New boots (Dunlop Sport BluResponse 185/60 R14 H getting fitted Monday to replace the mis-matched ancient cracked ones)
- Get the alignment done (pulls to the right quite badly right now)
- Full service with cam belt and head gasket seals change (no service history and some oil seeping from the rim of the head gasket, if that's what it's called!)
- Getting some squeaking on initial revving just after startup, which goes away quickly if you just give it a wee squirt on the accelerator, so will need to get that looked at (initial research suggests alternator belt?)
- Complete new suspension (shocks, springs etc., current kit looks pretty rusted, will need to research this one)
- Stick 1.8 brake discs / pads / calipers on it (which will require 15" wheels and of course new tyres, so no rush on this)
- New stereo and speakers (current one is rafted, should be fun!)
- Fit central locking, alarm, tracker, immobiliser (as I'm a total diddy and have locked the keys in the car before)
- Boot release kit and cable (see above, belts and braces)
- Fix / replace the electric window system (it has a horrible bodged-job manual replacement at the moment)
- Will probably need a new hood at some point, might as well get a Mk2 one fitted with the tasty heated glass!

After all that, it'll be onto a chassis / panel de-rust and weatherproofing crusade. Will eventually do some smartening up of the inside as well, footwell / puddle lights and stuff, some nice iPod integration etc., just creature comforts. :)

I'll *maybe* get a PAS rack and bits, but non-PAS is starting to grow on me, feels like a go-kart and is actually quite fun!

Might also look into retro-fitting ABS, but it looks heck of an expensive with all the parts that need found / replaced... We'll see.

I know nothing about car maintenance and work really, but I'd absolutely love to learn. Got a birthday coming up so hoping to get the Haynes manuals etc. from my Amazon wish list, then I imagine the process of buying lots of tools begins...

Hi Everybody. Thought I should introduce myself and say hello. I actually signed up to the forum when I bought an MX5 at the back end of 2011. Unfortunately life with that car was very short lived as it was stolen soon after I bought it. I couldn't bring myself to buy another one as at the time it would have had to live outside on the street where the last one was stolen from.

At the time of owning the last one it was my daily driver and I also had an RX7 with an LS1 V8 in it. Well, the RX7 has gone now, but I still have the engine and running gear etc and have been dying to find a new home for it. Well, after a lot of thought, I find myself back here. I'm just about to start looking for a new MX5 which will become the subject of something hopefully very special, and just a little bit mad. So, if anybody knows of a nice example for sale that might fit the bill, just let me know. There are obviously plenty on offer and I have made enquiries about a few that Im waiting for replies about, but it really would be a stroke of luck if I could find one with a full rollcage, a hard top and a dead engine or mechanical problems. Not asking much am I

Hopefully this stay will be more long term. Im sure some of you will be able to help me out a lot along the way, and hopefully I will be able to return the favour. I'll certainly be happy to make a project thread if anybody is interested in following the build. Im really excited about the project, and looking forward to getting stuck in

My name is Anthony (Tony) & I am from Arbroath as I am sure you can see from the subject message lol.

I am big into my cars (Classic & Modern) & have had the privilege of owning lot's of cars from Classic Mini's to Mercedes CLK Cabrio's but never an MX-5 up until now & I am blown away by the way it drives.

I look forward to browsing the site & hope to attend events in my area & further a field, gaining more knowledge on the MX-5 & putting face's to the name's

Hi everyone.

I've decided to start looking for an MX-5/Eunos to replace my Clio Trophy. (£4500 if anyone's interested )

I've been doing some homework over the last few days and have pretty much decided on spec although I have a few questions.

In the real world, is there much performance difference between the 1.6 and the 1.8?

Just how cheap to run are these cars? I'm looking to do most of the servicing myself which'll help but is there anything apart from the hood and rust that could cause problems?

Is a roll cage a worthwhile mod? I'm not looking to go on track or anything but I do like to use cars like these properly. How much to they strengthen the car, if at all?

Taken a long time to come to MX5 ownership, always driven company cars until a forced change in job in the past fourteen months gave me the opportunity to take the plunge. Must admit to being influenced by a friend who has previously owned an NA and now has an NC. Purchased the car, an 06 2ltr, some fourteen months ago and had nothing but good experiences so far. It's had to serve as an almost daily driver through the past winter and even without a hard top it's been up to the mark. It's a bonus my better half also likes the car, though we have had the odd discussion as to who drives it! Been dipping into the site/forum for some time and thought I really need to sign up, so here I am. Looking forward to meeting you all when the opportunity presents itself.

After seeing my sisters fella get a jap import mk1 for drifting and then my sister catching the bug of a uk spec mk1...I set about getting one myself.

I searched for what seemed like forever to find a good example, after 3 weeks I found one. A mk1 1998 (R) 1.6 in red. I think it may have been owned by a previous member on here as in the paperwork in has papers for mx5 owners club and the tax disc. It did need a little tlc but the reason I bought it is because it had the hard top included.

As said above it needs tiny tlc doing, mainly a new pvc window as it's been cut out. apart from that and the back reg plate its in good condition, 78k, FMSH, taxed, full year mot etc...my first mx-5.

I got it home and cleaned it

New member with a 1990 Mariner Blue Eunos

Onto my 3rd mk1 now and new to the OC, just picked up the Eunos yesterday after selling my red MX5 last week - while Im sure I will have loads of questions and input in the forums going forward my first problem is can anyone tell me how to change my Forum profile name? Doesnt make any sense now I have a new Eunos, I joined the OC then sold my car so the name was set up tongue in cheek not expecting to pick up a new one so quickly!

Picked up a really nice mk1 on Saturday.

I'd had a hankering for one for a couple of years and this is the best one I've seen.
There's a couple of small things need sorting, but all the main things are spot on and its a really good drive.

Very unexpectedly I'm now the proud owner of a mk1 Euros import in Mariner Blue as of last Sunday. Wasn't really even considering a new car, but my neighbour's father passed away in February after only finishing about half the restoration of his pride and joy mx-5. She found it too upsetting to keep the car and asked my partner if he could help her fix it up so she could sell it, but we offered to buy it and finish the restoration... And here we are :D

Owned an S2k a few years ago - loved it, but had to sell it when by business hit a slow period. So am thrilled I've got a new toy and looking forward to working on it and getting to know everyone - already have a list of things we want to do to it ;)

Good afternoon everyone,

its about time i joined this forum. im actually on my third mx5 now and i have no idea why i havent dropped by and said hello years ago. my current 5 is a mk2 1.8 S in twilight blue (i think)

my previous two were both mk1 v-spec 1.6's

dare i say it, i kind of wish my mk 2 was a mk1 :/ it just doesnt feel the same (beyond the obvious differences)

anyways, hope you are all out with the hoods down, its beautiful weather down my end anyway
