They are 5x7 oval mounted in an adaptor to fit the hole

Ovals? That hole looks a perfect 8 inch. Will it just pop straight in? Does the door panel come off easy enough?

    Yes Ovals.

The hole is 6.5", trying to fit an 8" speaker could be a squeeze

Door card comes off with 3 pop clip things, 3 screws, and some clips on the inside

Re: 8" door speakers for mk2.5?

I decided a few weeks ago I was going to replace my stock Mk2 door speakers.  After trawling through conflicting posts regarding 5x7" or 6.5" round speakers I took the trouble of taking my door card off to look what I had.

After an hour or so messing around Sunday morning I finally get the door card off & take some pictures with a tape measure for future reference.

Along comes AndyMk2 and posts a picture that looks not too disimilar to mine?!?!?!  Arrrgggghhhh your timing is impeccable!

    round speakers

For anyone else wondering.....here is a picture with the standard bracket to hold the 5x7" (or whatever size they are!!)

    oval speaker

So......AndyMk2, any recommendations on speakers?  I am looking at Kenwood KFC-S1782 or Pioneer TS-A1703i (I have a feeling you are going to tell me you have these already!!!)

Also, I was wondering about the standard speaker wire...should I replace the speaker wire? how difficult is it for a novice? Will it make a huge deal of difference?

Re: 8" door speakers for mk2.5?

Replacing the speaker wire on a Mk2 is a pita but can be done, you either need to fight you way through under the dash and locate the plug that goes into the door - take this apart and force wires through it,  or just drill a new hole in your door and run the wires through that.  It isn't difficult as all you are doing is connecting some wires, it's just very annoying and very fiddly, and basically I wouldn't bother unless you're an audiophile.

In my Mk2 I replaced the 5x7" stock speakers with 5x7" Infinity coaxials and a small amplfier, it was an improvement over the standard setup, louder, more powerful sound etc

In the Mk2,5 I just have the stock setup and will probably keep it that way

Cool, thanks for the info.  I can't be bothered messing under the dashboard or drilling holes in the doors, just want a quick job to improve the sound quality.  I don't have a clue when it comes to car electrics.

    Nice motor in your avatar!

Hi, they sounded awsome(car now written off thanks to black ice).  I had them in the door and two in the back parcel shelf with  a powered sub woofer behind my seat.  The main speakers were run from a 4 channel amp.  They gave a really deep base sound with.  Well recomend them.

Re: 8" door speakers for mk2.5?

The car already had a new-ish Blaupunkt CD player headunit in when I bought it.  Fairly basic but does match the completely black stock interior nicely.

I will try the speakers first, if I'm not over impressed I fancy the Kenwood KDC-W7044U for the iPod playback.  Does anyone have any feeback/experience with JBL speakers? specifically the GTO8628?

Is it easy enough to remove the old speakers from the 5x7" brackets?

Re: 8" door speakers for mk2.5?

    Hi Neil,

Those 8" speakers look ace. I am after replacing mine, and as they will be the only ones in the car I want to get the best sound I can. Will they run off just a headunit? Also do you remember the model of them and did you mount them straight to the door metal or have you got some plastic mount there? Also do you know how deep they were, and do you need to worry about anything fouling the back of them like the window mechanism?

Sorry for all of the questions... :s
