Scottish Highland Solstice Fling 18 to 21 June 2010

Scottish  Highland Solstice Fling 18 to 21 June 2010 -   NOTE PROGRAM NOW ADDED AT THE END OF POST

This years event will be based out of Ullapool (http://www.ullapool.co.uk/) on the west coast of Scotland thus ample choice of accommodation http://www.riversideullapool.com and better placed to explore the lessor know roads of the area and to take in the popular “White Lillie Fling” experienced last year.

Routes are “Flings” and participants are “Flingers”. Over four days, with the first and last the drive in and out, the main events taking place on the Saturday and Sunday to include a late evening or “night”, drive if it gets dark enough !, over this weekend culminating in the longest day of the year. If you're looking for a drive this weekend, happen to be in the area, even if for just one of the days then come and share the experience of the roads made for the MX-5............. with benefits, in this beauty country.

We like this area of Scotland but we have only been there in late May and September time.  What are the midgey's like in mid June time? Will we need anything to keep them off, as for some particular reason they like to bite me more than my wife.

Midges are not a problem at this time of the year. Levels are much lower as it only late Spring. Wetter warmer summer weather of late July August is when they become a problem. Anyway, with the top down they can't keep a good hold!!!  Hope that helps.

As Graham says you would have to be unlucky to encounter midges then, however if you do Avon 'Skin So Soft' is remarkably effective in combatting them.

Is anyone from South of the border thinking about going in June apart from me and my wife?

Re: Scottish Solstice Highland Fling 18 to 21 June 2010

I have some time off work booked either side of that weekend with no firm plans for what to do so have been toying with the idea of a highland adventure.

Even though I am only just south of the border it is quite a trek to the north west coast (7 hours according to Autoroute). Any distilleries in the locality ?

Re: Scottish Solstice Highland Fling 18 to 21 June 2010

It is quite a drive in from what ever direction but need not be a laborious part of the weekend. The Friday is the drive in for all of us and I propose a common meeting point for all coming from the south and group drive from that RV. Last year it was Balmoral followed by an enjoyble drive across the mountain roads. Balmoral would be a good starting place for this year as well or possibly somewhere like Pitlochory which would be a good rest stop for those that have travelled from further south, further on route RV's could be agreed as necessary. With the long daylight hours the drive up together becomes part of the whole event. Possibly including an evening meal stop on route.  Oh.... there are lots of distilleries. Both Balmoral and Pitlochory have their own. So come along for a good fling!!

Re: Scottish Solstice Highland Fling 18 to 21 June 2010

Good to see you are considering joining us. The drive from South Wales is motorway most of the way and if you can share the driving it is not too bad. With a break, joining the group for the drive though the highlands to Ullapool will then fuel you with energy helped by the longer hours of daylight as you progress north. That said, if you have time a good night stop would be in the Northern Lake District area or somewhere like Kendal. From here it is a very easy drive north.

Have booked two doubles at the Riverside Guest House.  We hope to travel up to Scotland on the Thursday and stay around the Glasgow area.  Husband Philip and I have visited Scotland on many occasions so are quite familiar with the country.  Actually stayed in Ullapool some years ago.  Await further details of the trip in due course and look forward to meeting you.
