    What's your PONO?

    Point Of No Overtaking.

You're on a journey, maintaining a good fluid rate of progress with plenty of overtaking opportunities. At which point close to your destination do you decide not to overtake even though you could, otherwise you'll end up looking like a pillock as the traffic you've just overtaken catches you up? 1 Mile, 2 Miles 5 miles?

How can you look a pillock when you're in front?

I guess when you are not going to  cause  those you have just overtaken to have to slow down by you turning off etc.

Glad somebody else considers this point.

I thought, I was the only one, with the number of prats that overake me and then within a few 100 yards bring me to a halt because they are turning off.

My other pet hate is when some  *%("* pulls out  of a junction, in front of you when the road behind you is clear, and then brings you to a stop as they  turn right.

I remember hearing once that 50% of accidents happen within a mile of your own home, ever since I've always been cautious when returning, its just the rest of the journey that I don't worry about Wink

So very true, in the last 15 years I've been run into 4 times within a quarter of mile from my house by prats who are not looking or paying attention to where they are going.  The last one was 100 yards from my front door which resulted in writing my car off and I live on a quite housing estate at that.

    Re: What's your PONO?

I cannot put a distance on it.

It comes down to a range of factors, such as, what I believe to be a safe speed for the conditions, the speed limit, how fast the other person is going, whether I will benefit from the overtake, etc

If I can make a safe overtake without inconveniencing other road users then I see no reason not to do so, proximity to home does not come into it.

    peleton72:
I remember hearing once that 50% of accidents happen within a mile of your own home

The reason for this is that people tend to relax as they are very familiar with the roads close to home and so stop looking for hazards, then when someone does something stupid they are not ready for it.

    Re: What's your PONO?

I only overtake when 1. there is a clear road ahead in front and on the other side of the road.

    2.  When the driver is driving at 20-25mph on a 30 or 40 mph road.

    3.  I never overtake a bus, a lorry or a coach, because they always hit you every time.  I was hit by a lorry and spun across the motorway in 1994 and thankfully all traffic managed to stop, the police arrived and noticed his mirrors were way out, (he pulled to the left and clipped the drivers side rear wing on my mk1 escort on the m61/a666 juntion (four lanes) and caused the car to spin out of control.  I thought I was going to die)

    4.  If anyone overtakes me I let them get on with it, if they do it dangerously, cutting in last min then braking then I give them a quick flash of lights.

So I have learnt not to trust anyone on the roads, and pull back to save my car being damaged.

I have never driven my mk1 to 100 mph, fastest I have been is 85mph.

    5.

    Re: What's your PONO?

I overtake if I feel like it...even if ive got no where to go Or no need to be there any faster.

I overtake because I like it...Its something I have control over

Getting stopped at traffic lights Etc and the car behind catching me up I can't control so why worry about.

The lights might change behind me then they would be further back.

Some people dont overtake cos they think its rude...I believe the slow car who dosnt pull in is the rude one

and crikey have I seen some gesticulation and light flashing just because Ive overtaken them safely.

Its the same as hogging the outside lane...some people see it as a slight on their ability

Just my 2 pence worth....and I have loads more change to spend on other subjects.....hmmmmm "Speed Cameras Dont Work" You can have a £1 worth on that one!!!
