Special Edition Register - Mk1
I'm compiling a Special Edition register of all Special Edition MX-5s produced for the UK market, starting with Mk1's. Please would owners of Mk1 Special Editions mind emailing "specialeditions at mx5oc.co.uk" with the following details of their car:-
Edition Plaque Number (if applicable) VIN (chassis number) Engine Number (if you can) Registration Date Colour
Please format the email like the example above, please don't add any other correspondence as I will not be able to reply.
The purpose if the register is to link the special editions to VINs as I am not aware of a list of this type being available anywhere. There will be no personal data stored.
A PDF of the list can be downloaded here and will be updated periodicaly.
(Latest update April 11th 2012)

Re: Special Edition Register - California & Merlot
Roadster Robbie:Not sure what to do with the data yet, or what I am allowed to do with it but I just enjoy collecting stuff!
Good idea!
The Data Protection Act mainly concerns the collection and retention of personal data so I cannot see why you should not be OK doing this.

Re: Special Edition Register - California & Merlot
I've started a (less ambitious) register for Dakars. I thought of asking for the registration number, but given that a lot of people blur number plates on photos, and number plates are blurred on TV, I assumed registration numbers were a bit too sensitive.

I believe that Doug has collected (and published) registration numbers for the Le Mans register.

Re: Special Edition Register - California & Merlot
Registration numbers are 'public domain'. You can see them on every car passing by. You can look them up on the DVLA site.
In addition VIN numbers were published - but most of these too were already in the public domain, on a well-known Mazda Dealer's webiste.
I also checked with as many owners as I could that they were happy for the info to go in the mag' - and they were because it helped advance the knowledge and understanding of the LM series of cars.
What you can't do - as far as I'm aware, is publish personal info - names and addresses of owners related to those registration number. You won't find this info on the DVLA site and they won't give it out, except to a legitimate owner of that particular car, when they will include the details of fromer owners.

Re: Special Edition Register - California & Merlot
On the subject of VIN numbers did you know that if you run the VIN number of a Merlot through DVLA it comes back as a Gleneagles. Apparently this is true for all Merlots. I know mine is on the log book as a Gleneagles. Is this true for anyone else. I contacted DVLA a while back and they said they would change it only if Mazda themselves agreed to changing the description of the car. I never did get round to contacting Mazda UK. Now I have been reminded of it I may well do so soon. I also get the same problem when trying to insure and get parts from a Mazda dealer.

Re: Special Edition Register - California & Merlot
My Merlot said 'Merlot' on the registration document...
Do you want ALL Mk. 1 Special Editions or just Californias & Merlots? Presumably not imports anyway...

Re: Special Edition Register - California & Merlot
Doing just Mk1 Special Editions for now, will expand to others if it proves popular.

Funny that, mine also says 'Merlot', but then it would since it used to be your car.

Re: Special Edition Register - California & Merlot
Is this just for California and Merlot? Not sure if mine would qualify, it is a "Classic" on an R plate. Not numbered, but I think there were 400 in the UK.
