We tried Footman James first of all, but they turned out to be significantly dearer than Saga (with whom we are already insured) and the woman on the phone displayed a real couldn't care less attitude. So I certainly wouldn't recommend them.

Won't insure a modified car, so no to both 5's (£391 for the pair from Footman James)

Won't insure my RV, they only do eurobox campers (Adrian Flux insured). So I demanded to removed from the mailing list

Saga’s ok if you plan to stay with them but should you wish to change as I did, you may find that other insurers and brokers will only recognise your max no claims from Saga as 4 years instead of 5 (assuming you had 5 in the first place) thus costing you more to insure.

A way around this seems to be to stay with Saga for 2 years min. and keep your documents for both years as proof of your NCB, then if you wish to change your insurer, you should be able to find one who will recognise your 2 years claim free with Saga and offer you 5 years NCB.

This was my experience 4 or 5 years ago!

    Re: SAGA insurance for oldies

I couldn't get a decent rate from Saga even though my Wife's already insured through them and I'm a named driver on her policy. I found the best deal through Adrian Flux, I guess the real challenge will come when I renew in August. Footman James didn't come up with a decent quote despite the OC discount scheme.

I was with Performance Direct before and found them pretty good. I think alot depends on your postcode as well as your age.

    Re: SAGA insurance for oldies

Saga = spawn of the Devil.

Went on-line to get a quote - was too expensive so ignored it.  Despite ticking the "no contact" box my e-mai laddress was bombarded almost weekly with spam, firstly reminding me that the insurance quote was a fantastic offer then offering me house/contents/breakdown/pet/holiday insurance.  The "unsubscribe from e-mailing list" buitton only took me to ""page Not Found".  So a quick e-mail to customer services was required.  End of the matter I thought, but no, oh no it was not.

Stuff from them started to come in the post.  A further e-mail to customer services resulted in the response - "it takes 8 weeks to action".  So for those 8 weeks I amused myself by opening their mail and carefully keeping the pre-paid envelope enclosed.  In this envelope went back all the stuff they had sent me - less anything with my name and address on AND pizza/local chinese/indian takeway menus, double glazing offers and the like that were also delivered.  Very childish granted but very satisfying.

But guess what - after 8 weeks it still continued.  So brought out the big guns - threatened legal action as 1) I had elected not to be contacted further and 2) my original request had been ignored.  Of course there was no real possibility of me instructing a solicitor (if I knew how to find one!!) but it seemed ot do the trick.  A grovelling reply followed with a promise of immediate action.  Not heard of peep from them since - probably too busy on the phone to Pizza Hut!

Great rant Cambs - you should join us Old Gits!

Quite agree with you though - had a similar experience and being over 50 certainly didn't help my quote with them.

    Re: SAGA insurance for oldies

I had a quote from Saga last week, they couldn't beat my renewal this time. In fact I find they are more expensive than most main insurers going on quotes in the past.

The RAC and AA came  up with decent quotes this time around on the Mk1 less than my renewal quote @£225 and £237 the latter throwing in basic breakdown cover, which I don't need.  So on to Aviva which was better still @£190 they give you so many weeks free, so they say. I don't get taken in by all that and ignore it. The  price will get ramped up next time around to pay for it.

So who may be getting my business, well my current insurer on my daily Vauxhall..... LV= Yep would you believe the last one I tried and the best price at £186 fully comp, protected no claims, £250 excess 5k mileage per annum. Incidently I tried these last year and they are actually cheaper this year by £29, I have though accrued more NCD this time around.

I'm sure if I persevere I can get it even lower by a few pounds. After a few hours you start to lose the will to live and just want to be out there enjoying the drive in it.

BTW......I do the same if it's unsolicited mail, as it keep me in a job, work for Royal Mail.Thumbs up

I'm now waiting for the floods of mail arriving, lovely jubbly Cry

    Re: SAGA insurance for oldies

Can certainly understand the comments about the reams of mail you get from Saga once they have your address but recently reinsured my MX5 with them after using their price match promise to get the premium back to £256........ but then fell out with them when trying to get a quote for my wife's car.

Got a quote and then when I went back 3 days later to accept the offer found that the premium had increased by £14.  When I rang them up to query this they told me their quotes were only guaranteed for one DAY!!!!

So then went and got an even cheaper quote from the AA.

......and believe it or not Saga and the AA actually use the same underwriters, Acromas.

Funny business, the car insurance business, need to keep your wits about you.Wink

    Re: SAGA insurance for oldies

I insured the car before my MX5 with Saga; first year they were quite reasonable, but the renewal price was nearly double any other quote.  Called them and reminded them of their offer to beat other quotes; they first offered £99 off (only £300 short!), then put me through to a supervisor who said that they might match my other quote, but they wanted documentary evidence from the other insurer first, so clearly not really interested.  I told them I wouldn't be renewing and confirmed this in writing.

They still sent a renewal note, and then claimed that I owed them premium.  Even after they had confirmed that this was a cockup, I had debt collectors pursuing me for several weeks.  Then there was all the unsolicited mail, which also took several weeks to stop.

    Never again.
