Bertini GTO - Body change for mk2

After months and months of playing on photoshop i have come up with a body change design for the mk2 and mk2.5 MX5
Its is on the same lines as the Monocraft and italia/retroforza.... but i have drawn some inspiration form lotus, alfa and ferrari
Here are the first designs - ideally i would like to get moulds made and and a GRP kit produced...
my aim is to get it finished for the 2012 kit car show in may at stoneleigh.

I have called it the Bertini ... which was the surname of my Italian grandmother.

Let me know what you think :)

Re: Bertini GTO - Body change for mk2

its not ment as any disrespect to the MX5 - of which i am an owner and love...

its just been a childhood dream of mine to design and make a car... from scribbling on exercise books as a boy.

what better car to base my dream on than an MX5?

if anyone else likes it then thats a bonus as i intend to make moulds to reproduce the body panels :)

I do like some of the features of your design and it may appeal to the kit car types.

thats what im aiming for... its really just something that i want to do as a little project - but if other like it too then thats a bonus :)

when its all finished i hope to get a stand at the national kitcar show in stoneleigh to see what the kitcar community think.

    I like it.

I liked it when TVR made the same shape:

I know they have more lights on the back but that's just down to the legal regulations for having lights on the back. Everything is a compromise.

Your pictures are pretty though, and if the mk2 looked like that I'd want one more than I do.

I like the front a lot, but just my opinion I think it looks like it's got a fat backside !! Wink

Wouldn't do it myself, but good luck to you. I'd be interested to see how it all goes and certainly the end product.

In response to the question of 'Why?' then there's no better answer than 'Why not'. I'm in agreement with the previous response, love the front, not quite so sure about the back. Not a big fan of the ducks tail spoiler. Now if the spoiler were an optional moulding then I'd just tick the no thank you box on the option list.

I can see little hints of Aston, Jag and even Nissan Z cars in there as well as the ones you have listed as inspiration. It doesn't look like a 'bitsa' car though. Looks like a proper design. Nice to see a kit that's not a Lambo style body on a Trabant chassis or similar.

Re: Bertini GTO - Body change for mk2

thanks for the possitive comments - it makes me want to make sure it happens

i bought a bronze/gold mx5 (a colour i dont like) so it will help spur me on to make the kit.

im thinking of reducing the duck tail slightly - not to affect the lines bur to give it a slight cut off appearance

i also toyed with twin rear lights and a US square style number plate - a bit like a 70's corvette.

Aren't those Mk1 doors on your mockup?

As for similar efforts using the Mk1, I can think of, off hand, the Simpson Design Italia 2, Monocraft MM1, D-Technique TD-1001R

And another Mk1 kit to throw in the mix, the Eva M22:

Re: Bertini GTO - Body change for mk2

you are right... they are mk1 doors... i started off designing it based on the mk1 and then decided to base my plans on the mk2. there is not a massive differance, but the door shapes and handels are slightly different to how it should look. i looked at the italia2 and monocraft... i like the front end of the monocraft, however i am not a fan of the italia2, i prefer the original mk1 italia/retroforza. I think both the italia2 and the moncraft are based on the mk2 MX5, but i find the italia2 styling a little akward.

I hope that i dont have to compramise too much with the design when i start to construct the body panals... but im sure everything will not go to plan.

i think that when i start constructing the panels i will be buying an old mk1 to try them on and see if there is a way i can get the kit to fit both cars...  not sure if this is possible at this stage :)
