Hi,

I brought my UK Mk2 in Racing Bronze about a month ago. It's my first convertible and set out into the sunshine yesterday for my first top down experience.

I have come from several years of V8's and twin turbo jap cars so am still getting used to the change of driving experince. Also it's my first manual for 8 years so it feels like i'm learning to drive all over again.

I brought the Mx5 because I wanted something fun, reliable and economical to run and so far it fits the bill perfectly.

I would be interested in any recommendations for servicing in and around the Reading area.

I live in Lower Earley and my office is in Reading. You may see me about, I have a green Eunos with a very loud exhaust and, unless it is raining, I always have the hood down.

Don't forget the sun doesn't have to be out for you to have the roof down.

 I know what you mean however my nice new car has a softtop that is doing a very good impression of a mobile water filter.

I'm having to spend most of my time with the hardtop on as the interior gets saturated without it in the rain.

The first thing on a long list of jobs on my new car to fix.

 Unless you have obvious tears in the roof, it sounds like you have blocked drainage holes.

easy 5 minute job to fix, if you need help drop me a line and will be happy to show you what to do.

 I've checked the drainage holes, they seem fine I managed to get a piece of net curtain elastic through from the top and out of the bottom so I assume that means that they are okay).

It seems to be more around the passenger side. When I first got the car the passenger side footwell carpet was saturated but I brought a hardtop very soon after and have had that fitted since to let the interior dry out. I also brought a couple of dehumidfiers to help dry out the interior and the boot (yes that leaks as well) that seem to be working well.

At the weekend I put some vaseline and silicon into some of the seals on the passenger side of the hood but it's not rained since so I don't really know if it's cured the problem.

I quite like the idea of a drive to Beaulieu, what's happening there on April 5th (excuse my ignorance if it's something major that I should already know about).

regarding the leak, could be many things, but also worth checking the windscreen is sealed correctly some cars i had in the past the seal goes and water ends up in the footwell (none of them were 5's to be fair)

Get mrs/kid/mate to sit inside the car with the hood up and run a hose across it, should give you a pointer?

I have no hard top and have never had a drop in mine, and I jet wash it every week. I changed the hood myself, a testiment to my DIY skills

 I've already sat the wife in the car and poured water over it, then she pointed out that I was supposed to have the top up.

Only joking, she did see a small amount of water coming in past one of the rubber seals between the seal and metal frame of the hood so I've pumped some silicon into the join to try and solve it. Hopefully test it out again this weekend. Itdoesn't look a bad enough leak to have soaked the carpets as much as they were though.

I've also noticed that the piece of plastic trim across the base of the windscreen (the piece that the windscreen wipers poke though) has a crack in it and wondered if water could be getting in through there somehow. The crack is directly above the passenger side footwell. My plan is to replace that piece of trim to see if that helps.
