PMs are private. That's all that there is to it. So that is the answer to your question Flea.

Regarding views, see other posts in the site discussion area. I'd post a link but I'm out with a friend because I don't spend my time on a pc reading pms! Put simply I have far better things to do. Watching paint dry is one of them! :)

Sorry to disturb your evening out with friends but I find this very serious.

Not interested in paint drying either.

So to make it clear the answer to my question is No then. No one has read my PM’s other than the intended parties?

Not as far as I know. The Admins have noticed the same with our PM "read" counts, and we think it is web bots, given that a PM is actually a web page. Sent you a PM for a little experiment for you to try out.

    Answer

    Correct.

    I appreciate the concern.

Wayne, please PM me about that because I can assure you nobody other than me can read them. For me to read them is a massive faff. It'd take.a good half hour for me to get them in any sort of readable format, and even then it's full of formatting code, etc. put simply, reading pms is not practical.

Just to clear up a couple of points, the rules have been in public view since the start of the forum, they were brought to the attention of members a few months ago for some specifics, so non of this is new stuff. As for Taff and his a moderator read my post....you've seen the reply from Ramsey, and as I guess it was a side swipe at me, rest assured, that like Ramsay, and the rest of the mods and admins I have far better things to do than read the PRIVATE MESSAGES of forum members

    Answer

not really, as Ramsay explained its technically possible to access the data, as it would be with any data.  There is no mechanism within this forum set up where anyone other than the sender and receiver can read the stuff...

When I have something private to say I don't say it by using a messaging system owned by a car club I'm not a member of.

I've questioned the privacy of PMs before (in a very similar thread to this one) and got the same answer. I only use PMs when I don't want to clutter a thread with stuff I only want to say to one person.

The forum is a database and I'd guess it'll be an SQL database. That means if a database administrator has access to the tables (where the data is stored) he/she could write a query to read messages and that query could include any of the fields in that database table or connected table. A database administrator would need to know the users database id and where the message table is....

Hence it is possible to write a query (and it's already written because we all use it) that reads PMs of a particular user. We all use this query already when we go into our private message inbox. That is exactly what it is!

Re: P.M's not so private, what the hell is this OC........

    Answer

sorry to be flippant by my postman has access to all my mail, he can open the envelopes read all the contents, and seal up again.  But so far as I know he doesn't do that, I trust him not to do it even though technically he could easily do it.

If you don't trust a system don't use it. Plenty of people won't do online shopping as they don't trust their credit card details to the internet, and as we all know those systems are not 100% secure, they can be hacked. The pm system on here is as secure as an internal messaging system as part of a car club forum needs to be in my opinion.  That's all it is, its not billed as being super secure with a security certificate or whatever is it.

I trust the pm system on here to do the job its there for, I trust it as much as I trust any other data carrying system that's sending my words backwards and forwards around the world, through numerous servers etc, every time I press send or post.  However I would not commit my credit card details to our pm system, but then nor would I email them to anyone and I am not keen on writing them on mail order forms and sticking in the post either!
