    The Love Affair Is Over

Here's a little tale for you.

The Friday of Christmas weekend, December 23rd, I finished work at 9.30 in the evening, walked to my car, got in and as I sat in the driving seat something brushed my head. I looked up and could see stars. Baffled for a second or so I got out and looked at two slashes in my roof from front to back. At the back the cuts joined up creating a flap hanging down in the car. After reporting the vandalism to my supervisor and the British Transport Police, and feeling thoroughly dispirited I drove home and - the only option open to me - got some gaffer tape to seal the top against the elements.

The following morning I went out to look and see just how bad the cuts were in daylight. As I stood looking at the car with its nose knocked out of shape by a wayward cat, a fifteen inch crack across the windscreen from a flying stone and now the black soft top with strips of silver tape across it I knew this little lady had broken my heart once too often. I had always wanted an MX5 and have tried so hard to love this car but, my oh my, she hasn't made it easy.

A week before the top was damaged I was driving to work at 4.30 one cold and icy morning when on a dead straight road the car started fishtailing from side to side with absolutely no provocation from me, and this despite fitting winter tyres for the winter. When telling this tale to a colleague I ended my ramblings with the thought, "I go through every winter wondering if I am going to end up in a hedge - or worse."

So, my friends, the MX5 has to go. She is far too fickle a mistress for me and the life I lead. If I could run two cars I would probably consider patching it up and using it on high days and holidays but that's not an option for me. I have already bought her replacement, going for the sensible option of 65mpg and £30 per annum road tax this time.

It's not been all bad. I have enjoyed wonderful moments driving through beautiful countryside with the top down, sun shining, hair ruffled in the breeze, you all know those pleasures. And - far more importantly - I have met some wonderful people in this club. In time to come they will be the memories I carry forwards of Mazda ownership.

In the meantime, if there is anyone out there brave enough to make me an offer - almost certainly less than you'd think - to buy a battered, distressed looking MX5 they would almost certainly have a chance to get it looking tidy again and still have a cheap car.

    Time, I think, for a sad face . . . Sad

A sad tale, but I think you will be back.

Give it a few months of saying "I used to have one of those" and missing the buzz of driving an MX5 and you will be planning your way back to the fold!!

Re: The Love Affair Is Over

You have to ask yourself is the love affair over or do you just need a rest after too many tiffs. Hidden inbetween your lines are a real fondness for this car with its faults of a cracked windscreen, off set nose and slashed roof, she has been the victim, she has been brutally disfigured, raise your eyes again and see her for what she is, and she is yours, give her the love she needs, cure her of her illnesses (you'll probably need to, to sell her on) and then look at her again in her crowning glory and try and convince yourself that separation is still the way forward. Take some photographs to console yourself and smile with your memories. It is said, "it is better to have loved and lost, than never to have loved at all". Good luck my friend at whatever you decide to do

Good grief!!!!! We are talking about a car here - a collection of metal, plastic, rubber and oils - not a family member!!!

It is a form of transport - nothing more, nothing less.  I am sure the little old lady in her Morris Minor enjoys the drive to church; like-wise the sales-rep also enjoys his drive in his Astra.

If I ever get emotionally attached to a car and start calling it "she" then I shall call for the men in white coats.

When it comes to sell mine - I shall just do that - sell it get something else and enjoy that.

    Really.

Re: The Love Affair Is Over

I was on the brink of selling mine just before christmas ( wanted another scooby) .

I actually went as far as listing her on ebay and was offered various scoobys etc for my little car.

Then i sat there and thought about my little car and how much fun i have had driving her since i purchased her on a rainy june night 2011, how good she looks, how simple she is too work on (unlike the wife lol) and how much i have become attached to her in the short time i had her.

I am not one for keeping my cars for long (get very bored very quickly ) but this one is staying.

I was coming back from Camberly  on monday with the wife and i saw a nice scooby and the wife said do you miss yours and straight away i said no, and the reason i said no is because ultimatley nothing drives and handles aswell for the money you pay for an mx5 and they looks so good especially with a few nice mods.

So Kev i think you will miss your little car and the enjoyment that she has brought you in the past and i wish you well with your new car but and its a big BUT  i bet you get another one.Smile

I really don't see how my membership of a noble clan can be brought into this. This thread is titled "The Love Affair Is Over" it's written by a chap who is quite distraugth at parting with his car. I have tried to console a brother from the Marque we both admire. I don't think your blarzay quips are really what is needed. No let this chap have his thread without us entering a verbal conflict or nullifying what it means to him.

It's nice to see that you have all kissed and made up now!

Good look for the future Kev, it's a shame that you are selling your 5. Just remember that you have become a good friend and you are always welcome to join us anytime, even if you still want to organise another skittle night? Big Smile
