    Gearbox Breather?

I was checking the 5 speed gearbox oil level on my 2003 MX-5 today, which has been leaking a bit. When I pulled the filler plug I heard a hiss making me think that the gearbox is pressuising. I think I could feel what could be a breather on top of the casing but couldn't see it. Is this the breather? Is it removable, if so how? Is it servicable or can it be replaced?

    Cheers

    Steve

I've managed to find it on a drawing in the mazda parts catalogue, I've even found a part number (17-530), but I can't tell how to remove it. I guess it must be threaded but I couldn't feel a hex on it to put a spanner on.

    Re: Gearbox Breather?

I've had a couple of 5 speed boxes on the bench, and can't remember a breatherThinking. The remote turret sits on top and there is also the speedo drive [on a Mk1] so presumably a speed sensor of some sort on a MK2. Also the reversing light switch and maybe a nuetral selected switch?

    Here's a pic of the top of a 5 speed from a 2003 car

    Re: Gearbox Breather?

Thanks for the pic. The 1990 parts catalogue does show one but I can't see where it would go on yours. It sort of indicates it would be a few inches in front of the dark patch on the right hand side of your pictured box. I'm going to have to climb under and have another inspect as the hissing noise when I pulled the filler plug out can't be a good thing.

    Cheers

I've just had a thought: What is the round thing in the middle of the dark patch on the right hand side of your box? Is that it?

That looks like it to me Steve. This drawing shows it somewhere in that location off the right side of the main box body part 17-530
