    Wrong Clutch Kit Supplied!

So, needing to replace the clutch on our 5, i took advantage of the MX5 Parts easter offers and ordered an Exedy 3 piece kit, which they list as fitting all 1.6's.

Kit on back order, so I get an email and it states the kit is for a 1.6 Mk1. Slightly suspicious I check their website again, and it still says that particular part number is for all 1.6's, MK1/2/2.5. so I think no more of it.

The clutch finally arrived today and the invoice clearly states its a 1.6 MK1 kit. So I found the Exedy website and check what they list; and sure enough their website lists the clutch kit as for NA1 codes. For NB18's up to July 02 it's a different kit, with a different pressure plate!

I call MX5 Parts, who tell me that as far as they know it is one kit for all MX5 1.6's, and thats what Exedy have told them. I'm still worried, so I call Exedy myself who confirm that NB & early NBFL need a different kit! A quick call back to MX5 Parts, and they don't stock the correct kit! So now I have to wait while they sort out if they can get the correct kit, what the price will be and how to get the wrong kit back to them!

So if anyone else has ordered an Exedy 3 piece kit off them for a 1.6 NB or NBFL as part of the Easter price reduction, be aware you may have the wrong kit! Check the part number with Exedy if in doubt & then check with MX5 parts.

How infuriating!   At least your research has paid off and you are not trying to fit the wrong clutch.  If you can spare a moment would you be so kind as to post the relevant part numbers and data for future reference?

MX5 Parts have now confirmed that they are ordering the correct kit, but as its not one they stock,it may take a week before I get it.

Hi Geoff, I'm always careful about posting part numbers in a forum, as they can change over time and there is a risk that folks take them as gospel, when they may no longer be correct! However at this moment in time according to Exedy's own system the following seems to be correct for 1.6's

    Kit no: MZK2064 for code NA1 9/89 - 12/97

    Kit no: MZK2120 for code NB1 1/98 on, NB18 08/00 - 07/02, and NB18 08/02 - 07/03

Presently if you order off MX5 Parts, they list the MZK2064 for all 1.6's, but will be altering their website to cover the MZK2120 kit.

The difference between them seems to only be the pressure plate, with the part numbers for the bearing and friction plate being the same in both kits.

Anyone reading this, should of course check that these numbers are correct for their particular application at the time they are going ahead!

Thankyou for the information.  I also could not agree more with your point that part numbers can, and do change from time to time. It is very much a case of check, check again, then recheck on matters such as this.

Totally agree! One of my friends was a parts manager for a large Ford dealers, and I soon learned that!
