Never heard of that. This picture of a Golf Mk1/2 setup (front macpherson strut) suggests not:

Maybe the rears might "fit", but I wouldn't fit it. If you're on a budget, you're better off just cutting the springs; not really recommended, but people have done it, and lived to tell the tale.

I did consider cutting the springs, maybe 1 coil, how far have other people cut them and got away with?

    See

There are a ton of other threads on miata forum. I don't recommend cutting the springs, but its better than trying to fit VW suspension. Cheap lowering springs can be picked up for £70. That will be even better than cutting rusted out worn out springs. £70 is not much more than a tank of petrol.

Ok so i finaly got round to cutting the springs on my 5, suprisingly easy to do, i did them without having to take them off the car which saved loads of time, and due to the design of the springs they seat perfectly as i only cut 1 full coil off, this also means with the car lifted and the shock at full extention there is still compression on the spring.

The car drives as it did before cutting, and in my opinion looks loads better
