Supercharged Mk2.5 Montana - Now complete!

Partly due to my dear late departed grandmother leaving me a small inheritance, I have a bit of cash burning a hole in my pocket and it's time... I feel the need, the need for speed.

Cute 'lil ol' Hannah is about to get some fangs. One word. Supercharger.

Having experienced a charged mk1 I was left dribbling and having chatted to a few owners there only seems one place to go. A few conversations answered all my questions to an amazingly high degree of competence, so once I've got the bits together... off to Skuzzle we will go.

I figure my dear ol' gran will be happy. She loved open top cars and my grandfather used to race MGBGTs around Brands Hatch in the 60s... so we'll be going back there for fun, homage and nostalgia at some point.

    Can't wait! :)

    Cheers,

    Drew.

Hi Drew, sounds great, you'll have to keep us up to date with the progress, I'm very interested in how things pan out with this mod, as I've a bit of an urge for it myself never been quite sure if a charger is compliant with the variable valve timing, have you slected which supercharger unit & ECU you intend to use yet and the sort of budget you are working to. Like the picture you put up, what are the 3 round thing below the centre vents on the dash are these extra guages?

    Re: Biting the bullet... :)

Yes, it's a VVT engine. I'm going to start with the Powercard Pro for the time being and work up from there.

I'm hoping for a little shy of 200bhp. Budget rather depends on whether I go for a second hard 'charger or a new one!

Here's a closer picture of the dials. Not great I'm afraid.

    Cheers,

    Drew.

    Re: Biting the bullet... :)

Yes on my set-up, the crank-case breather goes back in to a tee on the pre-charger elbow, after the MAF obviouslyThumbs up it only has a JR powercard and Bipes piggy-back ECU and a single throttle body at the moment, until the FMIC is fitted and a stand-alone ECU, crank overlay and smaller charger pulley and uprated injectors and fuel pump are installed...... so far it will very happily hold its own (in no particular order) against a Subaru Impreza Turbo, Mini Cooper S, XK8, and Bentley Continental convertible, Golf DSG 170TDi - TBH am tempted to leave it just the way it is and start putting together a better handling package - a big-brake conversion, Mk2 Bilstien dampers (with lowering springs) adjustable ARBs and 7J wheels c/w 205/45/15 tyres, as at the moment it still gives 29.5mpg and a 7.4s 0-60mph on super-plus with great reliability...

    Re: Biting the bullet... :)

I have to endorse all the positives in the thread, and especially Taff's last post. I've scared the pants off one or two so called muscle cars over here and the long legs in 5th gear make it a bit like driving a big V6 [if that's how the mood suits you]. I find the brakes [standard] fine and the rest of the car simply has decent tyres, koni shocks and 15" wheels. I haven't fitted the overlay pulley, it's lying on a shelf at the moment, as I just can't get around to fitting the intercooler. I don't know what you're going to do about fueling/timing, I've got a Megasquirt, and can't fault it. The main drawback for me is that not many dyno guys understand them. Go for it mate, you will have a ball

    Re: Biting the bullet... :)

My plans may have to go on ice for a bit... Angry

Looks like I have a gearbox malady to sort first - I'm losing the synchro on 5th gear, so will be on the look out for a new 'box. (Maybe a 6 speed if I can find one.) I'll change my juddery factory fit clutch at the same time.

Wrote a single word in my diary today.

    "B*gger."

    Cheers,

    Drew.

    Re: Biting the bullet... :)

In the box is an MP62 Supercharger and fitting kit for a Mk2.5 VT engined MX-5 (with extra bits to work alongside the air-con and ABS.)

I think I've got everything I need now, so once I've got my gearbox and bodywork issues resolved, I'll be booking a trip to Skuzzle down in Winchester.

He also seems to have come up with an intercooler setup for not much £, so since I'm going that far... might add that on too! :)

Power should be well north of 200 bhp at the flywheel after that... <dribble>.

    Cheers,

    Drew.

Wow, so you're expecting an increase of at least 60bhp, love the MP62, I've read up about superchargers and even started looking at parts & prices but when things start to go above £5k I start and think it's a little silly and justification to my wife would be a little hard. I'd love to follow the build and budget with an eye to copying what you are doing, unfortunately Skuzzle is a long way from me, how long are you expecting them to be with your car?
