Dear Mr Landy
Very pleased that your ECU is now fixed and I have my fingers crossed that there will be no further associated problems in the future. Given my experience, professional and personal, I can't let your promotion of an ECU repair service for a water damaged, plug and pay ECU go without comment.

I reckon on that basis alone it could well be the temp sensor.
Yes, anything that can minimise the length of time that the MK2, in particular, has its ignition left on to read the codes would be good.
You should PM Victormeldrew - he is in to this sort of thing:-)

'with a little black plastic box that has an LED stuck in it (in a hole) and two wires'
Sounds a lot more sophisticated tham mine - piece of two core bell wire with an LED soldered on:-)
Can you see a temperature sensor fault code in the list I sent you?
-
No, the MK2 has old style diagnostics that require interrogation using an LED. Far in advance of the MK1 that uses the same system but obviously behind OBD2 which came in with the MK2.5.
You said that there were no fault codes - how have you managed to check for these?
-
From my experience the temperature sensor usually causes problems for a short period of time between running on choke and normal running.
I would have thought there would be an error code for the temperature sensor............

Leaving the ignition on seems to be blamed for most MX5 coilpack failure but the strongest MX5 coilpack award as far as my experience goes, is awarded to the ...

Can anyone tell me if there is a difference between the FP39 and FS1E AFMs. Are they interchangeable and what problems, if any would be caused by fitting one instead of the other?
Thanks

Here is a Maita, net thread which includes the codes......................

The LED must be easy to make because I made one some years ago:-) I think member victormeldrew was making these so worth a private message to him.

We know someone with a fault reader but the socket/plug on the MX looks very different to any of the plugs he has. I guess you can buy an adapter or something but depending how much it would cost against on how long we try to fix it before giving up.
