My UK supplied 2.5 was completely rust free when I bought it at nine years old. I then had it comprehensively dinitrol protected. So you can't generalise - cars down South will probably experience less road salt - although summer only use will also be a major factor.

People will have different opinions on the best model - but what is the sort of budget you are looking at?
I assume Mazda view each new model as being better than the previous one as well - but then the retro & cost factor does kick in.

There are different products in the Dinitrol range. The one (4941) used for underbody protection is not the same one (3125) used for cavity injection. You should use both for a proper job.
Dinitrol costs more - if you google "dinitrol vs waxoyl" you will find various opinions.

I frequently drive with the roof up on sunny days - reasons are many - too much noise / wind at 70 mph, too much sun already that day, too hot (not often a problem in the UK) etc.
Maybe it's a middle-age thing - but I get sunburnt much more easily now, even with high-factor screen. A hard roof for me next time (folding preferably).

Yet there are members here who always object when someone mentions that imports are costlier/harder to insure.

If it has a NA petrol engine and isn't too small inside for someone 6' 3" then it's on my shortlist (alongside the GT86, and a Boxster). Turbo is undesirable and TD even more so!

They vary, mine were perfectly OK when checked over by the MX5 restorer.
