I use Autoglym - from Halfrauds if you must. Shampoo, rinse, proof - leave - drive.

I have a Mk 1 so I mustn't pretend to give sound advice, but I have never had an official service. She's done 125,000 miles.
Annual oil and filter change. Fluids. Drive.
Mk3 has things mine doesn't though: PAS, ABS, electric things. Perhaps it's better to have a legit service?

I had a Swiss cheese box with PiperX panel filter - good noise.
The I went Halfrauds universal air cone with heat shield and cold air feed. Better noise.
I'd never go back...and sod the power gain/loss..it's a 4 cylinder 1.8i engine for pity's sake! Still - I crack out 55mph in 2nd gear.
