• Re: Ignition Timing the Old Way?

Thanks Guys. Yeah, my strobe's 40 years old too! I guess I still have to bridge the TEN & GND terminals in the data link? Do you know why that is pls?

  • Ignition Timing the Old Way?

Lots of good stuff in the forums on setting ignition timing using an inductive strobe light BUT I don't understand why I can't just use my old light simply wired in series with the no.1 plug. It will surely flash every time the plug sparks so job done, I'd have thought. Grateful if anyone could explain please. Thanks Colin

  • Re: Mk1 best new springs?

OK I've finally cracked it! I can see that there are lots of options out there but we've now got... Meister R's with softer springs than their normal ones. Simple. But not cheap! Spring rates: 5kg/mm front, 4 rear. That's softer than the usual 7 & 6, but still twice as hard as the standard Mazda spec. Heights: I'm ...

  • Re: Mk1 best new springs?
the only thing stopping me is the worry that the bilstein's are too harsh
Yes but my problem is that the Bilsteins are harsh in town and on poor roads BUT fail to stop the car hitting the bumpstops quite often on, say, undulating B-roads. That spoils the ride and wrecks the handling. They seem ...
Are you going off  hear say, or just trying to work it out from black and white?
Thanks M-m, see my post to Little Bob. Colin

  • Re: Mk1 best new springs?
Probably too late now this is two months later but I have to say that I have nothing but praise for the Meister R set up.
No it's not too late, and thanks. The Meisters do look the business BUT I'm just worried that they may be too biased towards track use for me. I should mention ...

  • Re: Mk1 best new springs?
I have P5's old Puredrive kit, with its very stiff springs, but the ride is very smooth.
Great data and advice AT, thanks again. Phil D of P5 says the current Sportdrive springs are the same as yours but he's changed the dampers to 'in-house' units to get better tuning and quality ...

  • Re: Mk1 best new springs?

More data needed please anyone! I've followed up the excellent earlier postings on this, plus a few alternative suppliers of springs and dampers (of which there are many!) and I'm now much more clued up. This is what I've found so far, in case others might be interested... Bourne Road Garage were excellent (so's their ...

  • Re: Which Engine Spec?

Thanks Martin. Sorry to sound ignorant (which I am) but what I'm trying to understand is whether the VR ran a different spec engine or simply a later version of the Mk1 motor. I know it has a lightened flywheel and presumably the other mods mentioned by AT, but was it 'tuned up'? Put simply, how will I know what to set the ...

  • Re: Which Engine Spec?

AT, would higher compression mean changes to ignition timing - or valve timing, come to that? Also 'colder' spark plugs maybe? More importantly, to stop me pestering you with such questions, do you have a link to the data itself?
