Well, the box needs to be in park or neutral to start anyway, could it just be a dodgy switch?

You've got it all wrong! You shoud be seeing how LOW you can get the mpg.
I managed 20mpg once!!!

Electronic (in case you don't know) means that a computer decides when to make a spark rather than the old fashioned mechanical distributor method.
Wasted spark means that two plugs spark at once (being that there are only 2 coilpacks on your car) so one of them is 'wasted'...so to speak. Not needed, rather than off it's head... ...

This seems to be for the mk2....if anyone has a better guide feel free to shout!
1. Disconnect the TP sensor connector.
2. Remove the attaching screws.
3. Remove the TP sensor.
4. Verify that the throttle valve is fully closed.
5. Catch the tang of the TB on the TP sensor plastic rotor.
6. Position the TP sensor on the TB so that the mounting ...

Two possibilities...either you have plugged the black lead of the LED into GND rather than the FEN pin, or you have certain switches on and it's doing the mystery 'switch test' (blower, A/C...can't remember, just make sure all electrics are switched off)
If anybody has details of this 'switch test' please let me know...the ...
