sounds like the MK2 coil pack problem to me.
When the faulty coil pack gets hot it doesn't work.
Do you have a mate with a MK2 nearby? Try swapping and see if it goes away.

Saw a nice silver Mk1 with RS Azaiwa front bumper and sideskirts today. Was parked on the pavement as you drive out of the shopping centre on the Halfords exit.
