My brothers MK1 1.8 always had noisey tappets which I had put down to 'lack of use'. The one day though I noticed that his stainless steel tube exhuast maniolf was leaking on one of the welds on the mating plate. Took it off had it welded again and guess what. No more noisy tappets every since.

I would take the thermostate out and run it without to ensure the cooling system is functioning ok and that you are not getting any further excessive pressure in it. The elastomer in the vinyl ages and thus becomes brittle and instead of the plastic bend it cracks. Mine was like yours for ages then one day there was cracks everywhere. Didn't leak mind but it was definetly time to change it. Stuck a mohair one on it and made the car look absolutley wonderful. Wished I hadn't held on so long.

Thanks to Mx5parts quick delivery as usual I have swapeed it with a new one and all is working. Well here is the old socket. And here is the new one thanks to MX5 parts. Back of the old one. Back of the new one.   New one fitted and fully working.   Thanks for your replies now happy once more.
