A lot of discussion about these on various fora ,almost as much as Diesel Particulate Filters.
I know many manual petrol and diesel cars are fitted with them nowadays,my wife's Volvo(Vreg V40 petrol)had one and my Nissan Xtrail diesel has one(though thankfully no DPF).

Don't know the answer to your question,guess could be a problem if someone ran into the back of your car and told the insurance co the centre light was obscured.
We use a BOOTBAG for Hols but on top of a rack with the centre brake light built in. I bought it from MX5 Parts ,v.well made and although it took me an hour or so to fit ...

Not being an experienced ebayer,I wasn't particularly impressed with the 2 sellers I've seen so far,so will price one up with my local dealer,then possibly keep looking .

Our MX is now 7 years old,and whilst both sets of keys and fobs still work ok,one set has lived in a drawer pretty much since new,whilst the other has now got very worn and the metal end of the fob through which the ring passes has broken.
It's the type of Fob the key folds into and has 4 buttons,lock/unlock/boot unlock/intrusion ...
