After the Spring Rally at Beamish in 2007, we decided to give the West Country a break. While Haynes at Sparkford in Somerset is a well known publisher of car handbooks, they seem to be less well known for the fact they have a well stocked International Motor Museum. Groups have visited this before, but never as a national event, so it is time we went. Unlike Beaulie and Gaydon the cars at Haynes are representative of the international scene, with cars on display from Europe, the U.K. and North America. The 'Red Room' speaks for itself! The Rally will be held on the adjacent Showground, at which we hope to see a good attendance from both members and traders. A car competition will be a feature, with two classes of cars competing for the best at the show - that's one class for Mk 1's, and the second class will cover the rest. Entrants will be given their route maps at the registration point, where they can also get refreshments (free tea and coffee, bacon sandwiches at a small cost etc…), and from where they will also be started at regular intervals. The journey will be approximately 100miles and will involve several stops at places of interest as well as stops for refreshments etc and will culminate in a display of all the cars at the finish line in one of the Peak Districts historic locations (it's a secret until you get there) around mid afternoon. This is not a race and the planned journey time though the Peak District is to be around 4 hours to allow you to enjoy the scenery, stop for lunch or a picnic as well as enjoy your driving experience. There will be an entry fee of £10, which should enable a substantial donation to the chosen local charities to benefit. Last year’s event was attended by a record 41,000 people, making it Silverstone’s second largest event after the Grand Prix.  Many enthusiasts consider it better than a GP, since visitors are free to walk around the pits, inspect the cars and chat with their owners.  We were even allowed to wander around the pit lane stand on the pit wall to watch the races – just like in the good old days of Grands Prix!The first key ingredient of this event is a feast of world class nostalgic motor racing,  across all decades from the 1920s to the 1990s, featuring over 800 classic racing cars, including such great names as Ferrari, Maserati, ERA and Auto Union; Bentley, Jaguar, Aston Martin and Porsche; Cooper, Tyrell, March, and Lotus, all competing in 21 races over the 3 days, including a Le Mans style dusk race.  The Silverstone Classic is not totally historic, as it includes more contemporary races, such as Group C, Saloons, and late Formula One cars being raced and seen in their appropriate surroundings.The second key ingredient is the great assembly of classic cars from the extensive list of Owners’ Clubs across the UK and overseas; over 4000 cars were on display across the event period in 2007.  Further attractions will be added for 2008, including trade stalls, autojumble, automobilia, Concours d’Elegance, automotive book and toy fairs, plus entertainment such as period air displays, a funfair, themed catering, antique fairs and others targeted at all ages and levels of enthusiasm.Did you know that the first ever Formula One Grand Prix was held at Silverstone in 1948?
