After the Spring Rally at Beamish in 2007, we decided to give the West Country a break. While Haynes at Sparkford in Somerset is a well known publisher of car handbooks, they seem to be less well known for the fact they have a well stocked International Motor Museum. Groups have visited this before, but never as a national event, so it is time we went. Unlike Beaulie and Gaydon the cars at Haynes are representative of the international scene, with cars on display from Europe, the U.K. and North America. The 'Red Room' speaks for itself! The Rally will be held on the adjacent Showground, at which we hope to see a good attendance from both members and traders. A car competition will be a feature, with two classes of cars competing for the best at the show - that's one class for Mk 1's, and the second class will cover the rest. We will revert to member voting, so don't forget to check out the cars, and use your voting slip. More details on the Rally website; Spring Rally 08

Yorkshire Ridings: Spring Rally

“Spring Rally” Haynes Motor MuseumFri 16 - Mon 19 May 2008Just to let you know – we have booked into the Premier Inn, Yeovil – Friday, Saturday & Sunday nights. We’ve decided it is too far away for a Friday night going and Sunday night return, so we plan to take time off work, travel Friday morning and return Monday morning. We realise not everyone is able to or even wants to take time off work or travel that far but we hope that some can join us there for a great weekend away. Why are we telling you this now – accommodation is very limited (see flyer from “soft top hardtop”) so early action is required. Coordination of the trip down will happen nearer the event.

Solent: Ralph Harris' Drive

Ralph has kindly agreed to organise a drive, from Rownhams Services Westbound. Presented by the Cheshire Lotus Owners Group

Sunday the 29th June 2008

Open to all types of classic cars, sports cars and classic motorbikes the event will start at 9:30am from The Buxton Community School and involve a route though the Peak District National Park and some of the UK's most beautiful scenery.
Entrants will be given their route maps at the registration point, where they can also get refreshments (free tea and coffee, bacon sandwiches at a small cost etc…), and from where they will also be started at regular intervals.
The journey will be approximately 100miles and will involve several stops at places of interest as well as stops for refreshments etc and will culminate in a display of all the cars at the finish line in one of the Peak Districts historic locations (it's a secret until you get there) around mid afternoon.
This is not a race and the planned journey time though the Peak District is to be around 4 hours to allow you to enjoy the scenery, stop for lunch or a picnic as well as enjoy your driving experience.
There will be an entry fee of £10, which should enable a substantial donation to the chosen local charities to benefit.

The rest of us will follow in convoy to Goodwood, lets hope for a sunny day. It's a lovely drive on the A272, NO SPEEDING as the plod are normally out and about at the breakfast club events.Breakfasts at Goodwood are pricey in the restaurant, but you can get a bacon & egg roll and a cup of tea from the mobile caravan or bring your own.Suggest we leave about 1200 noon from the circuit and Paul and Jenny will sort out a shortish run to a picnic stop somewhere on the Downs. The car park at the main horse race grandstand gives lovely views to the sea and downs, but doesn't have any loos...!, the alternative is a pub lunch but that might be difficult to organise due to volume of people so a picnic is my suggestion so bring your usual MX5 picnic champagne and all and we will sort out the loo issue. See you all for a fun day.

South Wales: Monthly meeting

Monthly Meeting The Grove Golf ClubSouth Cornelly, Bridgend, CF33 4RP Tel: 01656 788771 Close to M4 Junct. 37 We have a private room called "Parklands" and they have a nice big, well surfaced car park. Last year’s event was attended by a record 41,000 people, making it Silverstone’s second largest event after the Grand Prix. Many enthusiasts consider it better than a GP, since visitors are free to walk around the pits, inspect the cars and chat with their owners. We were even allowed to wander around the pit lane stand on the pit wall to watch the races – just like in the good old days of Grands Prix! The first key ingredient of this event is a feast of world class nostalgic motor racing, across all decades from the 1920s to the 1990s, featuring over 800 classic racing cars, including such great names as Ferrari, Maserati, ERA and Auto Union; Bentley, Jaguar, Aston Martin and Porsche; Cooper, Tyrell, March, and Lotus, all competing in 21 races over the 3 days, including a Le Mans style dusk race. The Silverstone Classic is not totally historic, as it includes more contemporary races, such as Group C, Saloons, and late Formula One cars being raced and seen in their appropriate surroundings. The second key ingredient is the great assembly of classic cars from the extensive list of Owners’ Clubs across the UK and overseas; over 4000 cars were on display across the event period in 2007. Further attractions will be added for 2008, including trade stalls, autojumble, automobilia, Concours d’Elegance, automotive book and toy fairs, plus entertainment such as period air displays, a funfair, themed catering, antique fairs and others targeted at all ages and levels of enthusiasm.Did you know that the first ever Formula One Grand Prix was held at Silverstone in 1948? The 2008 Silverstone Classic will celebrate 60 years of Silverstone, to mark the diamond anniversary of the British Grand Prix. To ensure that you can drive your car right inside the circuit and park on the MX-5 Owners Club stand, it is advisable to book early. Bookings can be made direct to the organisers at Silverstone. The Silverstone booking office is now the "Motion Works Booking Office" and their number is 08717 033848. Remember to use booking code SCMX-5 when placing your order.
